Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the Ikea Platsa series with plastic fronts and am now using the furniture in my living room. Since I’m always cautious with plastic surfaces, I would like to ask: What is the best way to clean your furniture with plastic fronts from the PLATSA series?

It is important for me to find a method that effectively removes dirt, grease, and fingerprints, but at the same time does not damage or dull the surface.

Can you simply use warm water and a regular household cleaner? Or should special cleaning products be used, perhaps those specifically designed for plastic?

I have read that aggressive cleaners or abrasive agents should be avoided – what exactly does that mean for these fronts? Are there any tips for removing stubborn stains, such as ballpoint pen or marker stains?

Which cleaning tools like cloths or sponges do you recommend?

I look forward to your experiences and helpful advice! Thanks in advance.

I always wipe PLATSA plastic fronts with a damp microfiber cloth. If they are greasy, I use a little mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals. This method works without any problems.

I am quite familiar with the issue of plastic front panels, as I often feel unsure about the right way to maintain them. What helps me is to clean them very gently to avoid dulling the surface.

In my experience, mild soap solutions are usually sufficient. If I encounter stains that are difficult to remove, I carefully apply a small amount of isopropanol (alcohol) on a cloth, but only spot-wise and sparingly.

Maybe you could also test your cleaning method on an inconspicuous area first. This way, you can avoid potential damage.

Keep in mind that plastic front panels are sensitive to harsh chemicals and scratches.

For cleaning the Ikea PLATSA plastic fronts, I recommend the following approach:

- Use a soft, lint-free cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth.
- For light dirt, warm water with a small amount of mild detergent is sufficient.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, as they can damage the plastic surface and cause permanent harm.
- For stubborn stains, I suggest using isopropyl alcohol in a low concentration; use sparingly and always test first in an inconspicuous area.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or steel wool.
- After cleaning, dry the surfaces with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

These cleaning methods help maintain the gloss and durability of the fronts. As a general rule: less is more when it comes to plastic surfaces.

That’s a very helpful tip, thank you! I will definitely keep that in mind.

Could you specify what you consider “harsh chemicals”? I usually think of bleach or ammonia. IKEA’s website doesn’t provide much information on this.

One last question: do you have experience removing felt-tip pen stains? I had a small accident on a cabinet front, and water with dish soap doesn’t completely remove the mark.

Permanent marker stains can often be removed with isopropanol if applied carefully. Simply put a small amount on a soft cloth and dab the stain—do not rub.

Alternatively, a specialized plastic cleaner can also help. However, this is usually not necessary.
