Hello everyone,

I am planning to transport my Kallax shelf and am considering completely disassembling it to make transport easier and save space. My main question is whether taking the Kallax apart and putting it back together might affect its stability or cause any visible damage.

Does anyone have experience with this issue? I am especially interested in whether the joints (e.g., dowels, screws) might lose fit or hold after disassembly. Also, are there recommended methods to avoid damage or to restore the shelf to its original stability after reassembly?

I have also thought about transporting it fully assembled, but it is very bulky and impractical. Thanks in advance for your insights!

In general, disassembling a Kallax shelf does not permanently affect the fit of the joints, provided that the screws and dowels are not damaged.

The most common issues occur when screws or dowels are forcibly removed or damaged during disassembly. Minor reworking of the holes or using new screws may be necessary if they become worn.

For transport, it is advisable to carefully dismantle the shelf using appropriate tools to avoid wood splintering.

After reassembly, the shelf should be securely fastened again, and if needed, the holes can be reinforced with wood dowel glue to ensure stability.

This is a typical procedure for furniture of this type. Avoid unnecessary force when taking it apart.

as long as the screws and wall plugs are not damaged

Simply loosen the screws carefully without pulling out the wall plugs. This way, you avoid any damage. Of course, check everything after reassembling, and the shelf will be stable again.

Regarding "Can disassembling the Kallax cause damage?" I would like to offer a step-by-step tip:

1. Use a good screwdriver, preferably one with a ratchet function, to carefully unscrew the screws.
2. Do not pull out dowels or connectors forcefully if they are stuck – sometimes gentle wiggling is enough.
3. Place all screws and small parts in labeled bags so you can easily find everything when reassembling.
4. Before reassembling, check all parts for potential damage and clean the connection points from dust.
5. If needed, use wood glue on the dowels to increase stability.

Common mistakes that cause damage: pulling out dowels forcefully and losing screws. Following these steps will minimize stability issues later on.

In general, the Kallax is designed to withstand multiple assemblies. In my last moving experience, this worked without any problems. 🙂

The Kallax shelf is built with simple connectors that are originally designed for one-time assembly. Nevertheless, multiple disassemblies and reassemblies can work if handled carefully.

I recommend checking after each screw is inserted to ensure it still holds firmly. If not, wood glue or small wooden dowels can help increase stability.

For transport, the parts should be well protected to prevent damage to edges – especially the back panel.

Finally, after reassembly, check all connections again to make sure they are secure. A Kallax is sturdy enough if you work gently and systematically.

I agree, but I want to point out that if wood glue is used, the shelf will be somewhat harder to disassemble afterward. You should consider this before applying the glue. If it is planned to disassemble the shelf frequently, glue should be avoided.

The back panel is especially important to protect

The back panel is often overlooked, but it significantly contributes to lateral stability. Therefore, it should remain undamaged or be protected with cardboard during transport.

In summary: Transporting disassembled furniture without damage is possible if you work carefully and use appropriate protective materials.
