Juliusz-t41 Jun 2020 08:12Hello everyone,
I have a fairly specific question and hope to benefit from your experience: Are there metal hinges designed specifically for doors in the IKEA KALLAX system?
I am referring to sturdy, high-quality door hinges that can be mounted directly on the KALLAX shelving frame without the need for adjustments or improvisation. My main concerns are compatibility with both the material thickness and the design, as well as the load capacity of the hinges, since I am planning to install heavy doors.
Has anyone found suitable products for this or knows whether IKEA itself offers such metal hinges, or if it’s better to rely on third-party suppliers?
I would appreciate any tips, sources, or feedback regarding metal hinges for KALLAX.

For clarification: The IKEA KALLAX system was originally designed as an open shelving unit. Doors and their attachments are usually an addition, typically added through accessories.
IKEA itself does not offer metal hinges specifically made for KALLAX doors. Most commonly, simple plastic hinges are used. For metal hinges that fit the material thickness and opening mechanism, you need to rely on third-party suppliers or general furniture fittings.
It is especially important to pay attention to the door thickness (usually 12–15 mm (0.5–0.6 inches)) and whether the hinges need to be recessed or are visible on the outside.

When I installed my KALLAX, I sourced stainless steel hinges myself, which are actually intended for kitchen cabinets. They were sturdy, stylish, and held the doors securely – not standard IKEA, but really good quality.
If you prefer something more subtle, there are also hinges with a soft-close feature, although these tend to be a bit more expensive.

Are there actually metal hinges specifically designed for doors in the IKEA KALLAX system? The most important question is not only whether such hinges exist, but how "specialized" they need to be.
KALLAX doors are not fundamentally different in construction from simple wooden or MDF doors of similar thickness. Therefore, special "KALLAX metal hinges" are not necessary – rather, hinges that can be mounted accordingly.
What matters is the load capacity and the drilling hole positions. Those insisting on compatibility without any modification will likely have a hard time finding suitable options.
Where I remain skeptical: some users want a very minimalist design without visible hinges. This often does not match standard metal furniture hinges.
