Hello everyone,

I recently bought several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to extend their lifespan as much as possible. My specific question is: Which maintenance products, such as special cleaning agents, waxes, or oils, are particularly suitable for effectively caring for BILLY shelves made of wood or with coated surfaces without damaging them? I am interested both in cleaning and protection against moisture, scratches, or discoloration.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations for specific products and how to use them? Thank you in advance for your tips!

Hello Joku60,

regarding your question: Which care products extend the lifespan of BILLY shelves? Here is a brief overview based on different surface types and what I can recommend from experience.

1. For BILLY shelves with laminate or coated surfaces:
- Use mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents, ideally dish soap dissolved in water.
- Avoid aggressive cleaners containing alcohol or solvents, as they can damage the surface.

2. For solid wood variants (although BILLY shelves are mainly veneered or coated):
- Use wax-based wood care products (beeswax or specialized wood oils).
- These protect against drying out and moisture, enhance the appearance, and help prevent scratches.

3. General tips:
- A soft microfiber cloth is ideal for regular dusting.
- For stains, a slightly damp cloth is recommended to avoid discoloration.

Some use aggressive cleaners that actually damage the protective layer. As a result, the shelf loses its durability.

In summary, you should use mild cleaning products and, if needed, appropriate wood care to ensure longevity. If you know exactly what surface your shelf has, I can gladly recommend specific products.

Best regards!

Use pH-neutral cleaners or simply warm water with dish soap. For wooden parts: use beeswax or specialized wood oil products. Avoid harsh cleaners.

In addition to the previous tips:

BILLY shelves are generally made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating. Therefore, it is important not to use oil-based or strongly alkaline cleaning agents, as they can damage the coating.

A neutral all-purpose cleaner designed specifically for plastic or laminate surfaces is recommended. Afterwards, wipe the shelf with a dry microfiber cloth.

To avoid scratches, it is advisable not to place heavy or sharp-edged objects directly on the shelf without a protective barrier.

Regarding moisture protection: BILLY shelves are not waterproof. Liquids should always be wiped off immediately. For long-term protection, there are no special impregnations I would recommend, as they often negatively affect the surface.

For solid wood variants, I recommend wood care products

That is correct, but this rarely applies to BILLY shelves.

Hope this helps with your product selection.

Hello Joku60 and everyone interested,

I would like to revisit the main reason why using appropriate care products is important for BILLY shelves.

Since these shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating, it is important not only to use the right cleaning agents but also to pay attention to the cleaning method. Rough scrubbing or using steel wool can damage the surface and break the protective layer.

Please consider the following points:

- Avoid aggressive abrasive cleaning agents and hard sponges.
- Prefer soft cloths or sponges.
- Dust regularly to prevent small particles from rubbing across the surface.

If scratches or dull areas appear over time, you can use special restoration kits designed for laminate and plastic surfaces.

BILLY shelves are not water-resistant and liquids should be removed quickly

This is a very important note, which I can confirm – standing moisture quickly causes the particleboard to swell.

If you like, I can also recommend alternative shelf care products that I use myself and that have noticeably improved the appearance of my shelves.
