Hello everyone, I am planning to buy some Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially dressers and nightstands, which will be used daily. My main question is: How durable are the Hemnes pieces from Ikea with daily use in terms of material quality, stability, and wear? I am asking specifically because I read that Hemnes is mostly made of solid pine wood, which sounds sturdy but might also be prone to scratches and warping. Can anyone share experience or professional insight regarding long-term durability and maintenance? How do these pieces hold up in everyday use—such as weight on the drawers, frequent opening and closing, or cleaning? I’m looking forward to your opinions and experiences.

The surface is usually sealed with lacquer, which does provide protection, but with daily heavy use around drawer slides and edges, it gradually loses durability over time.I would like to add that the lacquer layer on Hemnes furniture, especially on pine wood, is applied quite thinly to preserve the natural wood appearance. As a result, mechanical damage in heavily used areas is not uncommon.
With normal household use, this means:
- The surfaces remain stable and well protected at first.
- After 2-3 years, wear marks appear on edges and drawer fronts that are frequently touched or moved.
I recommend paying particular attention to the precise adjustment of the drawers during assembly to avoid excessive friction or uneven strain.
Additionally, the gluing of the back panels is often done rather lightly, so please ensure the furniture stands securely and does not wobble, as this can put extra stress on the joints over time.

The tip about avoiding overloading is also crucial – I completely agree with gregto on that.

Additionally, I would like to mention that for Hemnes, replacing drawer slides and similar wear parts is possible, and Ikea provides the necessary spare parts, which makes the furniture repair-friendly. Due to the solid wood construction, wood shrinkage in new furniture should also be considered, so it is important to readjust carefully during the first few months.
