Good morning everyone,

I am currently looking into the IKEA Platsa system because I am searching for flexible furniture for our living room. I noticed that there is a wide variety of fronts available, but I have not found clear information on whether the Platsa system includes fronts with glass elements, such as doors with glass panels, to make the contents visible without leaving them open.

My question is therefore: Does IKEA officially offer Platsa furniture with glass fronts, and if so, how are these listed or named in the catalog?

I would be interested to know if anyone is familiar with this option or perhaps has installed a specific piece of furniture with glass fronts to enhance the appearance while still protecting the stored items.

Thank you in advance for any information!

Hello Tejuron,

Great question, which I’m happy to answer in detail, as there are often misunderstandings due to the many variations within the PLATSA system.

Regarding your question: IKEA currently does not offer complete furniture pieces with fixed glass fronts in the PLATSA range. The system mainly focuses on solid fronts made of wood or MDF with various finishes such as painted or coated surfaces. However, there are inserts or fronts that include a glass window, specifically frames with glass.

These glass fronts are separate components that you can use as doors, but they are not listed as a standard option for all PLATSA furniture.

Important:
- Glass fronts in PLATSA are usually labeled as “door with glass” in the online shop or catalog.
- They consist of a frame filled with glass and can be attached to certain cabinet frames.
- Availability may vary by region, and sometimes these options are offered as accessories.

Tip: In the IKEA planning software, you can often see directly which fronts with glass are available.

So, if you specifically want furniture with glass fronts, check the PLATSA configurator for “glass front” or “door with glass,” or ask at the store.

If you have specific models or measurements, I can also help you find the right fronts.

Phew, that’s exactly how I feel too! IKEA can really make it hard to keep track sometimes. 😅

I have a few PLATSA units with the standard doors myself, but glass fronts? I’ve never seen those except in the more expensive display cabinet systems.

If you manage to find them, they’re probably just individual glass panels, mostly for “display cabinet” styles.

So: yes, they exist, but they’re quite limited and not available for every piece in the PLATSA range.

There are PLATSA doors with glass, but not consistently for all models. Simply search for "PLATSA door with glass" in the store.

They usually only fit certain cabinet widths.

Great solution for cabinet units similar to display cabinets.

I find it interesting to take a closer look at the question "Are there PLATSA furniture pieces with glass fronts?"

It is important to understand the difference between complete furniture units with built-in glass fronts and individual front options. This distinction is often overlooked.

The question could also be phrased as:
- How does IKEA define a 'glass front'?
- Are these glass variations merely additional front panels, or are there complete furniture pieces designed from the ground up with glass fronts?

Based on my research and experience: most "glass fronts" for PLATSA are modular parts that can be purchased and installed separately, while furniture pieces that come standard with glass fronts are rare.

This leads me to the opinion that "PLATSA with glass fronts" is primarily a flexible combination, where glass fronts are options added to existing basic units, rather than a separate product line.

PLATSA does not offer complete furniture units with integrated glass fronts.

However, there are suitable glass doors available as fronts that you can install yourself.

Otherwise, check out BILLY, which offers more glass options.
