Hello everyone,

I have several heavily soiled Billy shelves made of MDF that I would like to clean thoroughly without damaging the surface. The shelves have grease stains, dust, and dried beverage stains, and I have already tried cleaning them with water, which unfortunately did not work well and in some cases just smeared the dirt.

My question to the community is: What methods and cleaning agents are best suited for cleaning heavily soiled Billy shelves, especially those made of MDF with a laminated surface?

Are there any home remedies or professional products that you would recommend, and what is the best approach to avoid damaging or harming the surface? I look forward to practical tips and experiences, thank you in advance!

Hey hayri!!!

It’s great that you reached out and asked such a detailed question! 🙂

I cleaned my BILLY shelves using a mild all-purpose cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth – and it worked really well! The key is not to use too much water and to dry the surface thoroughly. If you have particularly stubborn stains, you can try using some dish soap diluted in water.

And very important: avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals – they can quickly damage the surface. So it’s best to stick with gentle products and a bit of patience, that will definitely do the trick! Good luck! 🙂

I would recommend:
First dust dry, then wipe with a damp, well-wrung cloth. For stubborn stains, add a little dish detergent to the water. Afterwards, wipe dry immediately. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

I think that’s a good starting point, but sometimes you might need a bit more. I’ve been frustrated before with tough dirt on MDF surfaces. The important thing is not to get discouraged and to carefully consider what you use.

If it’s specifically about grease stains that have been absorbed over time, a mixture with some vinegar in the water could help, but use it cautiously.

Hayri, how old are the shelves? Maybe that will provide some additional insight.

Hello hayri,

to answer your question in detail:
1. Remove dry dust, preferably with a soft dust cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.
2. For greasy or sticky spots, use a solution of lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Wring the cloth out well to prevent the surface from swelling.
3. Gently wipe the area, then follow up with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
4. Finally, dry thoroughly, as MDF and laminate surfaces can be sensitive if water soaks in for too long.

Household remedies like vinegar can sometimes be too harsh, so it’s better to test carefully first.

If the stains are very stubborn, you can try a special furniture cleaner for laminate or veneered surfaces. Important: Always test in an inconspicuous spot.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

One more addition:

For heavy dirt on laminated MDF shelves, I recommend a cleaning product based on isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) or specialized surface cleaners that contain this ingredient. These are very effective against grease, ink, or nicotine stains, dry quickly, and leave no residue.

It is important not to scrub but to gently clean with a lint-free cloth and the cleaner. Afterwards, wipe the area dry.

I would avoid solutions containing ammonia, as they can damage the laminate.
