ᐅ Does the KALLAX finish change over time – does it happen to you as well?

emilsenHello everyone,
I have a question for the community regarding IKEA’s KALLAX shelving units: Have you noticed that the finish on a KALLAX shelf changes over time? I have observed, in particular, that the original color and surface texture develop a kind of patina or color change after several months to years, which significantly affects the appearance.
I’m curious if this happens to you as well, especially with units that are heavily used or placed in exposed areas. Could this be a characteristic of the veneer or surface coating? Or do environmental factors like light and humidity have such a strong impact on the look?
I would appreciate any experiences or tips on how to minimize these changes. Maybe there are special care instructions or product recommendations that help keep the KALLAX finish looking fresh for as long as possible.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Or do environmental factors like light and humidity have such a strong impact on the appearance? This is indeed a very interesting aspect that is often underestimated. KALLAX shelves are not made of solid wood but are constructed from coated particleboard or MDF with a decorative foil or melamine coating. These surfaces are inherently susceptible to UV light, which can gradually alter the color pigments in the decor. This results in slight fading or the development of a patina.
Humidity also plays a role: when humidity levels fluctuate significantly—for example, due to seasonal changes—the material can expand or contract slightly. While this usually does not cause a visible change in appearance on its own, it can affect the surface and make the protective layer a bit more vulnerable.
Technically, the coating is not designed to remain completely unchanged, as IKEA primarily uses practical and cost-effective solutions for this product category. There are special cleaners or waxes that can be applied to protect the surface; however, I recommend checking the ingredients carefully beforehand, since not all are compatible with melamine coatings.
How much the decor changes also depends on how the shelf is used: if the unit experiences heavy mechanical stress, scratches, or spills, the surface will deteriorate more quickly.
I would be interested to know how exactly you use your KALLAX—does it often stand near a window or is it more protected? Are cushions or pads used, or is something placed directly on the surface?

My KALLAX is actually placed on the south side, so it gets several hours of sunlight daily, although no direct window light, since there is a closed glass cabinet door between the shelf and the glass.
Mechanical stress is rather low, as I mostly store lightweight decorations and books. So far, no liquids have been spilled.

I would appreciate specific advice.
Super interesting topic! I also noticed a slight color change on my KALLAX, especially on the upper shelves.
I completely agree! Since I moved the shelf further away from the window, the discoloration has significantly decreased 🙂
A tip from me: use furniture pads or decorative cloths, as they also protect against abrasion and extend the surface’s lifespan. Plus, it looks nice!
By the way, I think a small change like that makes the piece of furniture feel more personal; it shows that it is being used in everyday life. 🙂

Just avoid having the shelf exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.
