Hello everyone,

I have had an Ikea Kallax shelf for several years, which originally stood firmly and neatly in the corner of my living room. Unfortunately, I’ve recently noticed that the shelf is no longer perfectly aligned at a right angle to the wall. It looks a bit crooked, which is especially noticeable when I look at the shelves or the items placed on them. The shelf is neither overloaded nor significantly damaged, but I suspect that over time the material might have warped due to moisture or load.

I’m interested in what I can do to straighten the shelf again without having to completely take it apart. Has anyone had experience with stabilizing or correcting something like this? Are there any tricks to permanently adjust the angle back to being correct? Or is this just a common issue with Kallax that one unfortunately has to accept? I look forward to tips and possibly suggestions on useful tools or aids for this kind of adjustment.

Thanks in advance!

the shelf no longer sits exactly 'square,' meaning it’s not perfectly aligned at a right angle to the wall.

I know that well! It happened to me too – in my case, there were slight shifts at the base because the floor wasn’t completely level.

My advice: first check whether the shelf is really standing on a flat surface. If not, small felt pads or furniture wedges under the legs often work wonders! This way, you can make the whole shelf stable and level.

And don’t worry, this is not uncommon – furniture often shifts a bit over time, especially if the material has absorbed moisture. 🙂

Maybe you could try pulling the shelf slightly away from the wall and carefully realigning it. Sometimes just a small adjustment is enough to get the angle right again – just give it a try, it should work! Good luck, you’ve got this!

Hello Egonko,

your description is very helpful! Slight distortions in Kallax shelves are often due to two factors: the material itself and the condition of the floor underneath.

Kallax is made of particleboard, which tends to expand or contract with changes in humidity. This can indeed cause the shelf to no longer stand at an exact 90° angle.

I recommend the following steps:

1. Check the floor under the shelf for unevenness—using a spirit level.
2. Inspect the shelf fastenings and the connection of the back panel—loose or detached parts can also cause shifting.
3. If you don’t want to fully disassemble the shelf, you can try stabilizing the sides with small spacer strips or furniture wedges.
4. If the back panel is warped, you might try realigning it or reinforcing it with a thin plywood sheet to improve stability.

It would also be helpful to know whether your Kallax back panel is screwed on or just slotted in, as this significantly affects stability.

I hope these tips help! If you like, I can guide you through the process.

3. Stabilize with spacer strips or furniture shims
4. Realign or reinforce the back panel if necessary

I’d like to add to this because such issues with Kallax units are more common than you might think.

Kallax modules are made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard, which can actually expand and contract with temperature changes and humidity. To get the shelf back perfectly square and stable permanently, you should follow these step-by-step instructions:

- First, remove all shelves and contents to get a clear overview and make the unit easier to move.
- Make sure the floor is level and load-bearing. Ideally, use a digital spirit level. Extremely uneven floors are often the main cause of a wobbly shelf.
- Go over the connections and screws holding the unit together—small nails or screws sometimes loosen over time. The back panel is usually attached with small nails that can come loose, causing the whole unit to twist.
- To bring the shelf back into the correct position, you can place special plastic or wooden furniture shims under the feet. Inside, you can also fix narrow wooden battens or metal brackets on the back of the shelf if possible.
- If the back panel is warped, I recommend replacing it with a new plywood panel, as this is sturdier and provides a solid connection.

How old is your Kallax unit exactly, and is it placed against a wall with an interior corner that might have slight angle deviations? These details are important to assess how much you can or should modify the shelf.

I’d be happy to provide more detailed instructions if you can specify your situation further.

For a quick fix: Place the shelf on a level surface or adjust it using furniture shims.

Check for loose screws or nails and tighten or replace them as needed.

Adding an extra plywood back panel can help if the original one is warped.
