ᐅ Wall-mounted shelving on an uneven wall – what installation options are available?

ridu39Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of mounting a Billy shelf on a rather uneven wall. The surface is irregular, with bulges and cracks that make standard screw solutions difficult.
My question is: What mounting options are available to securely and stably attach a Billy shelf to such an uneven wall? I am especially interested in practical solutions that help to keep the shelf level and ensure its load-bearing capacity.
I would like to discuss suitable anchors or mounting aids and am also open to alternative suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I recommend first using a spirit level to carefully measure the wall areas where the brackets will be installed. Then, you can place spacer plates or washers made of sturdy plastic or metal foil between the wall and the bracket. These are flexible and can be adjusted to compensate for unevenness.
Additionally, spring-loaded telescopic anchors can be used, which provide some adjustment for irregular surfaces. It is also important to adjust the drilling depth precisely to the wall thickness so that the fastening can support the required load.
What exactly is your wall made of? Drywall, brick, old plaster?

Why always see the wall as the problem? A Billy shelf is really not the standard for perfect wall mounting. I would rather consider a freestanding structure or support the shelf from the floor instead of struggling with half-baked tricks on the wall. Especially with old walls, that can be the safer approach.
Honestly, isn’t it a bit much to get hung up on a Billy shelf? ;-)
