Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and unfortunately noticed some unsightly scratches on the surface. They seem to be superficial, but of course, I don’t want to replace the entire shelf. On the internet, you can find plenty of tips on how to remove or at least make scratches on wooden furniture less visible using simple home remedies. I’m therefore interested in: Which proven home remedies do you recommend for effectively removing or visually reducing scratches on a Billy bookshelf? Are there any special methods or products that work particularly well on the Billy shelf’s surface, which is often white or natural-colored? I appreciate any tips, experiences, and advice, including those about protecting the surface after treatment.

The question is clear, but it’s important to differentiate: are the scratches only superficial, or are they deeper? Superficial scratches can often be treated with home remedies, but deeper damage becomes problematic if the design and material need to be preserved.

Also, it should be checked whether the Billy shelf is actually made of solid wood or rather a wood-based panel with a laminate or veneer finish. This greatly affects the choice of treatment—what works well for solid wood can damage or discolor a laminate surface. So, more precise information about the material would be helpful to provide specific recommendations.

I once had a white Billy with scratches, and I actually tried using a walnut – yes, really! I simply rubbed the walnut over the scratches a few times because the natural oils seem to slightly fill in the wood fibers. The result was quite surprising to me; the scratches became less visible. It feels a bit like a “grandma’s trick,” but it’s worth a try. :-)

You can then wipe it with a damp cloth and some mild detergent to spread the oil and avoid leaving an oily residue. Very simple household remedies, cheaper and safer than most chemical products!

That sounds interesting, but it’s important to stay critical with such methods. Oily foods or natural substances could theoretically leave stains quickly. There is also often a lack of clear evaluation on how well the darker oils work on a white surface. In some cases, this can even worsen the visual appearance.

Personally, I would prefer using a white furniture touch-up pen or wax crayons that match the color exactly. They can significantly improve small scratches and are specifically designed for laminate surfaces. Home remedies are nice, but not always the best solution for coatings.

For white Billy shelves, I recommend using wood or furniture touch-up markers in white. Apply carefully once, then wipe off any excess with a soft cloth. This makes minor scratches nearly invisible. It’s quick and protects the surface.

Exactly, this is important! Billy bookcases usually have a melamine or foil coating, not real wood. Therefore, you should avoid household products that could damage the surface, such as nail polish remover or vinegar.

Furniture care products designed for laminate or melamine are better suited, as they clean gently and protect the foil. Scratches can often only be covered up or lightly concealed with a furniture touch-up marker.
