Hello everyone, I am currently considering using the IKEA Kallax for storage in my attic and I’m wondering if this is actually a good and practical solution. The attic is not fully finished, more like a utility space with some dust, occasional moisture, and of course temperature fluctuations. My idea is to use the Kallax shelves because of their adjustable compartments and sturdy construction to organize and store items such as tools, boxes, or old books. I’m interested to know if anyone has experience with Kallax in attics, especially regarding durability under these conditions and stability on possibly uneven floors. Thanks in advance for your opinions!
Hello Jara52, that’s an interesting question! I would like to add a few points: Kallax shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which does not handle moisture very well. In an attic exposed to temperature fluctuations and occasional dampness, the material can deteriorate over time. The durability will mainly depend on the humidity levels. You should also ensure stability, for example by securing the unit to the wall, since floors are often slightly uneven. From a technical perspective, Kallax is better suited for indoor spaces without significant temperature fluctuations, but with proper precautions it can still be used.

Kallax is definitely a clever system with its compartments – it’s easy to quickly tidy up the mess. 🙂 However, in my attic, I use more sturdy shelving because the climate up there can get a bit damp. And dust? Oh yes, there’s plenty of that too, of course. Maybe just keep the compartments closed with boxes – that way, the most important things stay clean and protected.
It’s great that you’re seriously considering these questions! 🙂 Kallax is extremely versatile and looks great, but moisture could really be an issue in the attic. I would definitely recommend using protective covers or boxes if you decide to use the shelf. This way, you get the best of both worlds—organization and protection!
