SARGOHello everyone,
I am currently planning the setup of a children's room and am considering which IKEA Besta furniture pieces are particularly suitable. I am especially interested in aspects such as storage space, child safety, flexible use, and child-friendly design.
Which Besta variants or combinations have you used or would recommend for children's rooms? If anyone has practical experience with modifications, such as additional safety features, flexible shelving parts, or child-friendly surfaces, that would be great.
Thank you for your help!

I find the BESTA cabinets with doors ideal because they hide open storage and are childproof.Thank you, that’s a helpful tip. I’m also interested in how you make the most of storage space with children of different ages. Do you find shelves, drawers, or a combination work best? Flexibility is important to me since the room should be able to adapt as the child grows.
Hello SARGO,
I also have BESTA furniture in my daughter’s room and can speak from experience. I recommend a combination of cabinets with doors and drawers. Doors provide storage for larger items and keep toys out of sight, while drawers are perfect for smaller things, such as craft supplies or clothing.
Additionally, I have installed child safety locks on almost all the furniture, as the doors can otherwise be opened too easily, which can be problematic with young children.
The BESTA series is very flexible because you can combine cabinets in various heights and widths. The option to choose fronts in bright colors or with painted finishes also makes it more child-friendly and visually appealing.
A tip: pay attention to rounded edges or install extra edge protectors, since children’s rooms often have a lot of climbing and jumping activity.
I also think that open shelves are less suitable because dust collects more easily and children tend to take things out and scatter them around. Closed units help keep the space tidier and more organized.

I recommend a combination of cabinets with doors and drawers.I fully agree with that. It is very important that the BESTA furniture is securely installed, meaning it must be fixed to the wall. This is especially a must if there are children around, as the furniture could tip over otherwise.
Additionally, the adjustable shelving components are a major advantage of the BESTA series. The shelves can be positioned flexibly to accommodate toys and books.
When it comes to color, I would prefer neutral tones like white or light gray, so the furniture can grow with the child without looking too childish as they get older.
For me, the most important criteria for BESTA furniture in a child’s room are stability and child-friendly surfaces. Most BESTA fronts have painted or coated finishes that are scratch-resistant and easy to clean – ideal for children’s rooms.
The possibility to combine different pieces in various sizes also allows storage space to be optimally adapted to the room layout.
Especially with children who quickly accumulate a lot of toys, I recommend a combination of tall cabinets and lower sideboards, which can also be used as seating.
