Some time ago, I purchased the IKEA Platsa system for my living room. Now I’m wondering: how easy is it to expand the IKEA Platsa system later on if I want to add more modules or rearrange the setup?

I am especially interested in whether IKEA offers specific connectors or adapters to ensure the expansion remains stable, and if the process is similar or different for the various module types (cabinets, drawers, shelving units). It would also be helpful to know if the assembly instructions provided make it easy for non-professionals to manage, or if a certain level of DIY skill is recommended.

Who here has experience with this and can share tips on what pitfalls to avoid? How flexible is the system in practice when it comes to later expansions?

Interesting question, Glagau! I have expanded the Platsa system several times myself, so I’m happy to give you a brief guide on how it usually works.

- Basically, the Platsa modules are modular and can be easily extended with suitable spacer pieces and connectors. IKEA provides screws, corner braces, and cover plates that help create a stable connection between new and existing modules.
- It’s important to plan carefully before expanding which modules you want to add and how the layout should be. There are also special connectors for corner solutions if you want to design around corners.
- The assembly generally follows the provided instructions. However, if you combine several modules, it can get a bit tricky, especially if you mix drawers and doors at different heights.
- My recommendation: for the first time, use all connection points for stability, even if it takes more time. This way, you avoid wobbly constructions.

If you like, I can also give you tips on tools and step-by-step preparations.

In addition to jelites’ explanations, it should be added that the Platsa system is designed for expansion, meaning there are specific IKEA specifications that should be followed.

- It is important to carefully follow IKEA’s assembly instructions, as the stability of the connecting elements is essential.
- When combining multiple modules, additional wall mounting is recommended to prevent damage and accidents.
- Similar principles apply to the different types of modules, although the fastenings vary slightly; for example, drawer slides require more precise adjustment.
- Expansion without additional tools is generally possible, but using connector fittings significantly improves stability.

Therefore, the extension can be easily implemented if you proceed in an organized manner and obtain the appropriate parts.

In short: IKEA Platsa units can be expanded later without much effort.

- Order connectors
- Align the modules
- Secure to the wall

Just write down everything you want to expand beforehand. Then it will fit.

Yes, they do! These small helpers are really useful for firmly connecting the cabinets together. Otherwise, the whole thing can quickly become wobbly, and nobody wants that, right? 😄

I also enjoyed the system because you can rearrange it as you like – almost like building blocks for adults! Just a tip: Don’t plan too spontaneously, because when you’re in the flow during assembly, keeping an eye on the instructions is your best friend.

Based on my experience as a frequent IKEA user, the following approach is recommended for a later expansion of the Platsa system:

- Check the existing modules for compatibility with new extension parts
- Use the supplied fasteners, such as angle brackets and screws, *never* improvise
- Sometimes it is easier to disassemble the front and reassemble it rather than screwing onto the existing assembly
- Install the wall mounting according to the manufacturer’s instructions to increase safety

The system is very flexible, but simple snap-together assembly is not sufficient if the furniture is to remain stable. For non-professionals, it is advisable to follow the steps carefully and methodically.
