Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my IKEA BILLY bookcases, which I want to place on a carpeted floor. I’ve noticed that the stability on this soft surface is somewhat lacking, and the shelves may wobble or tip slightly when loaded.
So my question to the community is: What is the best way to stabilize BILLY bookcases on carpeted floors? What options are there to secure the bookcase against wobbling and tipping without damaging the carpet or making major modifications? Are there specific fixings, anti-slip materials, or construction adjustments that you would recommend?
I look forward to your experiences, ideas, and tips – feel free to explain why a particular solution makes sense. Thanks in advance!

Hello Feixkau,
a very interesting and important topic, especially since carpets pose many challenges for the stability of furniture. Let’s start systematically:
1. Basic issue: Carpets deform under pressure. As a result, floor contact points are less stable, and the shelf can tip over or slide.
2. Anti-slip mats: A first step is to use special anti-slip pads or rubber feet. There are self-adhesive rubber pads that you can stick to the base of the shelf. This prevents slipping – but often it is not enough to prevent tipping.
3. Base plates: Some use thin, sturdy base plates or wooden boards under the shelf to better distribute the load and create a more or less rigid substructure. You can also combine these with anti-slip mats.
4. Wall mounting: The best and safest way is to attach the BILLY shelf to the wall – IKEA provides brackets for this. This is especially important on carpets. A shelf tipping under load is a safety hazard.
5. Additional shelf connections: If several BILLY shelves are placed side by side, you can screw them together or secure them with connecting brackets to increase stability.
One final question: What type of carpet is underneath the shelf (high-pile, thin and firm, with rubber backing)? This can influence the choice of measures. And how much load is planned for the shelf?
In general, I recommend considering the combination of wall mounting plus rubber feet or anti-slip mat as the safest solution.

Don’t worry about drilling – it’s quick to do and makes it much safer. If you attach the brackets on the inside, they are hardly visible.
I would just do it like that, if it’s possible for you as well! Good luck, you’ve got this!!! :-)

What type of carpet is under the shelf (high-pile, thin and firm, with rubber backing)?Thank you for the detailed contribution! My carpet is a medium-pile, fairly dense wool carpet without rubber backing or any other coating.
The load will mainly consist of books and binders, so it will be quite heavy. Wall mounting is generally possible, but I prefer not to make too many holes in the wall in that room.
Can you say whether, for example, thin floorboards under the shelf feet really distribute the pressure sufficiently, or is that mostly a misconception? Are there any experiences with whether a combination of rubber pads and wooden boards holds up if you want to avoid drilling?
