ᐅ Which screws are suitable for IKEA PLATSA if you move frequently?

zosimusHello everyone,
I am planning to frequently take apart and reassemble my IKEA Platsa modules, especially during multiple moves. My question is: which screws are best suited for the Platsa furniture series if you want to disassemble and reassemble them often without damaging the material too much or having the screws lose their grip?
I understand that IKEA usually uses special fasteners, but I am looking for alternatives or better screws that can withstand the stresses of repeated assembly and disassembly. If you have experience with suitable screws or alternative solutions (e.g., different thread types, lengths, materials), I would appreciate a detailed response.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Basically, the PLATSA series is based on particleboard with a PVC surface and mostly uses so-called cam lock fittings. If you move frequently and plan to loosen the screws often, I recommend using fine-thread screws with a diameter of no more than 4mm (0.16 inches) to avoid stressing the material too much. Stainless steel screws are also advisable for corrosion protection.
Avoid screws that are too thick or too long, as they could split or tear the wood.

The question is very interesting since IKEA furniture is not primarily designed for frequent disassembly and reassembly. To choose the right screws, it is important to know that PLATSA components are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard with a melamine coating. These materials provide limited holding power for standard wood screws when repeatedly assembled.
Screws with fine threads are ideal because they minimize splitting of the material. Screws with a length of 30–40 mm (1.2–1.6 inches) are sufficient, as they grip deep enough without creating unnecessary stress in the material. For frequent moves, it is also recommended to use so-called knock-in nuts or metal connectors, which can be inserted into the drill holes and securely fastened with screws. This preserves the material and ensures a stable connection.
Question: Do you use the original cam locks, or do you want to switch entirely to your own screws? This makes a difference when choosing the fasteners.

Question: Are you using the original eccentric connectors or do you plan to switch entirely to your own screws?Thank you very much for the detailed reply! At the moment, I am using the original connectors, but I find the original screws too weak for long-term use—especially repeated unscrewing significantly reduces their holding strength. For this reason, I am considering using my own screws, ideally with metal inserts or similar.
Do you have any specific recommendations for knock-in nuts or metal inserts that work well with PLATSA? Are there standard sizes or proven solutions?
This topic is actually not straightforward, as PLATSA furniture falls into the mid-range category in terms of particle board quality. To extend the lifespan when frequently disassembling, it is advisable to upgrade the screw connections.
- Steel knock-in nuts (also called threaded inserts) with fine threads work well. You can insert these into pre-drilled holes and then use machine screws.
- Make sure the knock-in nuts match the thickness of the board (common thickness for PLATSA is 7–10 cm (3–4 inches)).
- Screws with a 4 mm (0.16 inch) diameter and countersunk heads are recommended to keep the surface flush.
Practical tip: Drill the holes slightly larger than needed for the knock-in nuts so they fit cleanly, but not too large, or they will lose grip. The extra effort pays off if you disassemble frequently.
The type of screw you use (e.g., ISO 7380 or pan-head) also depends on the tools you have.
