Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install some IKEA Metod glass cabinet doors in my kitchen and have come across some uncertainty regarding the selection of the appropriate mounting screws. My question is therefore a bit more detailed: From a technical perspective, which mounting screws are ideal for IKEA Metod glass doors to ensure both load-bearing capacity and appearance? I am particularly interested in recommendations concerning screw size (length and diameter), material (such as stainless steel or galvanized), and thread type. It is also important to know whether these screws are directly compatible with the original IKEA hinges or if alternative fasteners would be advisable. I want to avoid damaging the glass doors or having them improperly secured due to incorrect screws. Who has experience and can provide reliable advice? Thank you in advance!

For the installation of IKEA Metod glass fronts, I generally recommend stainless steel screws, as they are rust-resistant and durable, especially in kitchen environments with higher humidity levels. The most important factor is a screw length of about 13 to 16 mm (0.5 to 0.6 inches), depending on the thickness of the front and the hinge. The diameter should not exceed 3.5 mm (0.14 inches) or 4 mm (0.16 inches) to avoid overloading the glass or the mounting plates. The thread type should ideally be fine-threaded to ensure a secure fit in the supplied drill holes. If you use original IKEA hinges, screws with an M4 metric thread are usually the best choice. For alternative hinges, you should of course check the mounting requirements, especially regarding thread type and screw length.

A very interesting topic, especially since many people simply use standard screws when buying fasteners for Metod glass fronts without considering the mechanical and visual requirements. Here are a few important details to keep in mind when selecting screws:

- Screw length: IKEA typically uses screws about 13 to 15 mm (0.5 to 0.6 inches) long for Metod glass fronts. This length is sufficient to hold firmly in the metal fixture but short enough to avoid the risk of cracking the glass.
- Diameter: M4 is standard; M3.5 may fit in some cases but should be checked carefully, as screws that are too thin do not provide adequate stability.
- Material: Stainless steel V2A is preferred due to its corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Zinc-plated steel screws can rust and cause surface damage over time.
- Thread type: Fine-thread (e.g., metric fine thread) offers better grip in the metal hinge parts.

Additionally, I strongly recommend using the supplied plastic spacers or washers during installation. They prevent direct metal-to-glass contact, which could otherwise cause stress or glass breakage.

One more practical tip: If you want to replace the screws because, for example, the originals do not match the desired length or material, make sure the replacement screws have the same thread and head shapes. Otherwise, the front panel can warp or become loose.

What about your setup? Which hinges and fasteners are you using exactly? The choice of screws can vary slightly depending on the hinge system.

M4 stainless steel screws, 13-15 mm (0.5-0.6 inches) long, are standard for Metod glass fronts. Do not use thicker screws, as this will affect the fit. You can usually buy the original screws individually.

Hello Eliseo7, I completely understand your concerns. Glass fronts are more delicate than wooden doors and require precisely fitting mounting hardware. The screws should hold the glass securely without leaving pressure marks or creating stress.

From my experience, stainless steel screws are ideal to ensure this. They prevent rust stains, which can quickly become unsightly on glass fronts. For Metod glass fronts, I have usually used M4 screws about 14 mm (0.55 inches) long, which aligns with IKEA’s recommendations.

Also, make sure there is a suitable washer or plastic spacer between the screw head and the glass to increase the contact area and protect the glass.

You can generally order original screws separately if you need replacements. If you use alternative hinges or fastening systems, it is important to match the thread length and shaft diameter to the specific holes to avoid warping or loose-fitting fronts.

If you like, I can share some sources for good-quality mounting hardware.

What exactly are you using, which hinges and fasteners specifically? Depending on the hinge system, the choice of screws can vary slightly.

Thank you for the detailed reply, that’s very helpful! I used the original IKEA Metod hinges, the standard model with the drilling-in installation method. They already come with plastic washers, which I plan to use.

I will focus on M4 stainless steel screws approximately 14 mm (0.55 inches) long.

I’m also curious: Are there any specifics regarding the screw heads for these screws? Are pan heads or countersunk heads preferable? And what about the surface finish (polished, matte)? Since the screw heads are partially visible, I want to avoid unsightly contrasts with the glass and other elements.
