Hello everyone, I recently assembled my new IKEA Brimnes furniture and am now wondering how to best protect the surface to keep it looking like new for as long as possible. I am especially interested in methods or products that help prevent scratches, minor wear, and general abrasion without negatively affecting the appearance or feel. Are there any home remedies or specialized care products you would recommend? I would also like to know if sealing with a specific type of varnish or wax is advisable and how these should be applied. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello FLOYAEL, I can understand your question well. Brimnes surfaces are usually melamine-coated, which already makes them quite resistant to scratches and moisture. However, I strongly advise against using aggressive cleaning agents. For protection, I recommend attaching soft felt pads under objects you place on the surface to prevent scratches. Additionally, you can apply a thin layer of furniture wax or a specially formulated furniture polish, but these products should be suitable for melamine surfaces. A lacquer or sealant is not necessarily needed, as it can alter the surface or make it dull.

It is interesting that you mention sealing. However, I would question whether it really makes sense for melamine surfaces. Often, barrier coatings or waxes limit the breathable properties of the surface, which can lead to issues like delamination. Are there any reliable reports or studies showing that sealing Brimnes melamine provides a real benefit? Personally, I believe the best care is regular, gentle cleaning combined with protection through covers or felt pads.

As an addition: According to the manufacturer’s information from IKEA, the Brimnes surface is made of melamine-coated particleboard, which is resistant to moisture and many household chemicals, but not indestructible. Ideally, it should be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Furthermore, I advise against any subsequent painting or sealing, as this can cause unsightly effects or even chipping. To prevent scratches, use protective pads and avoid direct contact with sharp objects.

A simple tip: use coasters and felt pads to prevent scratches. For cleaning, warm water with a bit of dish soap is sufficient. Avoid strong chemicals.

To provide surface protection, you can try using furniture polish designed for laminate, which often also works on melamine. It is important to test the polish first on an inconspicuous area.
