Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my Ikea Besta cabinet where some of the screw holes are damaged. Specifically, the holes for the back panel fasteners and some of the connecting screws have either stripped or become too large, so the screws no longer hold firmly. This seems to happen quite often, especially when the furniture is assembled and disassembled or moved multiple times.

My specific question is: What practical and durable methods exist to repair damaged screw holes in Ikea Besta furniture so they hold securely again? I would like to know how to fix this without having to completely replace parts, what materials or techniques are recommended, and if anyone has personal experience with this.

I appreciate any advice on screw fillers, wood glue, alternative fastening methods, or replacement parts. Thanks in advance to everyone who can help!

It’s really frustrating when the cabinet wobbles or just doesn’t hold properly. I had this problem with a cabinet where the screws hardly held anymore, and it felt completely unstable.

I can encourage you: there are definitely solutions that work even for non-experts. For me, filling the damaged holes with wood filler and then using suitable dowels and smaller screws worked well. I was unsure at first if it would hold, but after drying, it was much more stable.

You do need some patience, as you should wait a day for everything to dry. I would also recommend not screwing directly into the old hole with the original screw, but rather using appropriate dowels in case the wood has become too soft.

Basically, it is important to distinguish whether the damage is on a visible surface or a hidden one. For damaged screw holes, I recommend the following approaches:

- Wood glue mixed with swollen sawdust to fill the damaged holes
- Alternative: Two-component wood filler or epoxy adhesive for a durable repair
- After curing, new screws or smaller dowels can be inserted into the repaired area

Durable stability is very likely if the filler fully cures and the screws have a tight fit in the end. Screws with threaded inserts (also known as threaded bushings) can provide additional strength under heavier loads.

It is important to remove any old material and loose parts before repair so that the new bond sits cleanly.

The issue with screw holes in Besta is a common challenge when reusing parts. I recommend a structured repair approach:

1. Assess the condition: How severe is the damage? Are the holes just slightly worn or completely deteriorated?
2. Choose the filling material: For minor damage, wood filler or wood glue mixed with filler (e.g., sawdust) is sufficient. For larger damage, I use polyester resin or epoxy adhesive mixed with wood flour.
3. Consider the type of screw: Many IKEA pieces use partial-thread screws. When applying new filler, once it has dried, carefully screw in the fastener using the appropriate torque setting to avoid damaging the material again.

If the damaged holes are for the back panel screws, which usually don’t bear much load, thin metal brackets can be added for extra support. For load-bearing connection holes, threaded inserts installed into the filled hole often help.

I would be interested to know the exact type of screw or element involved, as this influences the repair method.

Wood glue into the hole, wait until it is dry, then insert a small screw again. Alternatively, you can fit a piece of wooden strip in and glue it together, which provides more stability.

I’m curious about the exact type of screw or connector you’re referring to, as that influences the repair method.

Thanks for asking! In my Besta unit, it mainly involves the small cylindrical cam dowels and the metal screws that hold the carcass together. The back panel is fixed with standard wood screws, and the holes there are clearly stripped.

The most problematic areas are the joints between the bottom panels and the side panels, where the cabinet sometimes wobbles slightly when pressure is applied.

For me, the back panel screws mainly serve to stabilize the whole piece and prevent the furniture from bowing out at the back. I was thinking of repairing the holes in the back panel with wood filler or putty, and for the cam dowels perhaps using special threaded inserts or wood glue combined with clamping.

Are there any specific adhesives or dowels that work better for Ikea furniture than standard products?
