Hello everyone, I have a specific question: Are there any useful tips or best practices for replacing the hinges on IKEA Brimnes furniture?

The hinges on my Brimnes dresser are starting to show signs of wear, and I want to replace them either with identical original parts or suitable alternatives. It is important for me to know the best way to carry out the replacement, which tools are needed, whether there are standard sizes, and if the new hinges need to be properly adjusted so that the doors close perfectly again.

Since IKEA often uses proprietary components, I am also curious if the hinges can be replaced with other models from a hardware store, or if a direct replacement through IKEA is the only viable option.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Tekutra,

to assist you properly, you should first identify the exact type of hinge on your Brimnes furniture. IKEA usually uses concealed hinges with a snap-on mounting plate attached to the door and an adjustable mounting cup.

Important for replacement:
- Measure the existing screws and the hole diameter on the cabinet and door (approximately 35mm (1.4 inches) for the cup mounting hole).
- Check whether the hinges are soft-close or standard types. The soft-close mechanism is often integrated in IKEA hinges, which can make replacement more complicated.
- For replacements, you can order original IKEA hinges (for example, from IKEA or spare parts dealers). If opting for alternatives from hardware stores or specialist retailers, it is crucial that the dimensions match exactly; otherwise, installation can cause issues.

Tool tips: Phillips screwdriver (matching the hinge screws), possibly a small pin punch for the fasteners. To adjust the hinges, there are small adjustment screws on the hinges: you can easily align the door horizontally, vertically, and in depth with these screws.

I would also like to know if your doors are warped or if the hinges are simply loose? And whether you already have replacement screws or hinges, or if the purchase is still pending?

This will affect the approach to help you.

Thank you for the quick and technically detailed feedback. The doors are not warped, but one of the hinges feels noticeably stiff and sticks when opening, while another seems a bit loose. I haven’t purchased any replacement parts yet, as I wanted to wait for some advice first. Would you recommend checking if the lubrication or the mechanism can be adjusted before replacing parts, or should I go straight to using replacements?

I have the necessary tools available, including precision screwdrivers and hex keys.

Hello Tekutra,

a brief guide on how to proceed:

- First, completely remove the door to access the hinges more easily.
- Clean the hinges thoroughly, especially with soft-close models where dust or residues often accumulate.
- Lubricate the joints with a drop of machine oil.
- If that doesn’t help, loosen the hinge with a screwdriver and take it out.
- You can find suitable replacement hinges at IKEA under spare parts. Since Brimnes is a standard range, these are usually available.
- Spare parts from hardware stores are often not compatible due to special fittings/mountings.

Summary: First clean and lubricate; if no improvement, order IKEA replacement parts, then exchange and make fine adjustments on the screws.

Replacement through IKEA is the easiest option. You can order the hinges directly. Hardware store hinges usually do not fit because the drilling and mounting points are different.

For the replacement: The hinges are attached with a clip-on mechanism. Lift off the door, then detach the hinge, screw in the new one, and click it back in place. Use the small screws on the hinge for adjustments.

Exactly, this makes installation very convenient, but if installed incorrectly, there is a risk that the hinges won’t properly snap into place, causing the door to hang unstably.

I would like to add that when removing or putting the furniture back together, you should ensure it is placed on a stable work surface to avoid damage.

Also, if the hinge is very stiff, cleaning alone might not be enough, as the internal plastic components of the soft-close mechanism can break over time. In that case, the entire unit must be replaced, not just the screws or lubrication.
