Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint some of my Ikea Besta furniture because I’m not completely satisfied with the standard colors and would like to give them a more personalized look. Now I’m wondering: which types of paint work well and are especially durable for Ikea Besta furniture? It’s important to me that the paint matches the furniture color-wise and is also scratch- and impact-resistant enough so it doesn’t peel or get damaged easily during everyday use. I have heard about special spray paints, acrylic paints, and even alkyd paints, but I’m not sure what exactly to pay attention to or if there are any paint recommendations—especially regarding durability and appearance. Does anyone have experience or tips on which paints are particularly suitable for Besta and how to proceed best? Thanks in advance!

Hey, great question! Some time ago, I refinished my own Besta furniture and can definitely recommend using high-quality acrylic paints. 🙂

They are relatively easy to work with, have a mild odor, and dry quickly. It’s important to sand well beforehand and apply a primer — this ensures the paint adheres really well.

As for color choices: classic white or gray works nicely, but bold colors like teal or dark green really stand out if you want something fresh! If you want something more durable, there are also excellent polyurethane paints that offer great resistance to scratches and impacts. Just check at a hardware store — they often have small sample jars available.

Don’t give up, painting is a lot of fun and the furniture will look fantastic afterward!

For painting Ikea Besta furniture, I recommend the following approach:

- Sanding: The surface should be sanded with fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320) to ensure better paint adhesion.
- Primer: Always use a suitable primer for engineered wood or MDF, as these furniture panels are usually lacquered or melamine-coated.
- Paint type: For durability, polyurethane or acrylic paints are preferred, as they are significantly more resistant compared to standard dispersion paints.
- Application method: Spray paints provide a smooth and even finish, while rollers or brushes may leave more texture.

In terms of color, muted shades like anthracite, dark blue, or earth tones are popular because they give the furniture an elegant appearance and make dirt less visible. Light colors appear friendlier but require more maintenance. There are also specialized furniture paints available that offer some flexibility to prevent cracking.

In summary: A combination of proper sanding, priming, and high-quality polyurethane or acrylic paint provides the best balance of appearance and durability.

I would like to add a brief guide on how to effectively paint Besta furniture:

1. Preparation
- Thoroughly clean the furniture to remove grease, dust, and dirt.
- Sanding: Lightly sand melamine or plastic-coated surfaces with 180-220 grit sandpaper to dull the gloss.

2. Primer
- I recommend using an adhesion primer specifically designed for plastic surfaces or MDF to ensure better paint adhesion.

3. Paint selection
- Acrylic paints are water-based, low odor, and offer a wide range of colors.
- Polyurethane paints are more durable against scratches and moisture but require more careful application and are more sensitive to temperature and humidity.

4. Paint application
- Spray paint provides the best and most even finish.
- Brush or roller may leave streaks but are suitable for smaller areas.

5. Protective finish
- Finally, applying a clear coat with a matte or glossy finish is recommended to increase durability.

Important: Allow proper drying time between each step according to the product instructions.

Common mistakes:
- Not sanding before priming
- Using paint without adhesion primer
- Being impatient during drying time

This way, you will achieve a durable and attractive result in the end!

To be honest, I think the durability of paint on Ikea furniture is often overestimated. The surface isn’t solid wood but rather a coated substrate – even the best paint won’t provide the full durability you might expect.

If you want something truly durable, you should consider adhesive films or veneered covers instead. Painting looks nice and clean, but after a few years or some scratches, it won’t look good anymore.

That said, given the price of the furniture, it’s still worth painting – but there are definitely limits to what paint can achieve!

I can partly agree with that but would like to explain in more technical terms:

Ikea Besta furniture is usually made from particleboard or MDF with melamine or foil coating. Painting involves two potential adhesion areas:

- On the surface: The old coated surface needs to be roughened to create mechanical grip for the new paint.
- Edges and corners: These are often made of ABS edging, which complicates painting because plastic and wood-based materials react differently.

My recommendations:

- Sanding and thorough cleaning are absolutely essential.
- Primers specifically designed for plastic improve adhesion and reduce peeling.
- Water-based acrylic paints are more environmentally friendly but not quite as durable.
- Solvent-based polyurethane (PU) paints provide high chemical and scratch resistance but require good ventilation during application.

Another good option is a multi-layer paint system with intermediate sanding to achieve hardness and a smooth finish.

What paint system are you currently using?

I also recommend doing test areas, as coating types can vary between different production batches.
