Hello everyone, I own several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA and would like to clean them in the most environmentally friendly way possible. My main concern is to avoid using harmful chemicals that could damage the surfaces or be harmful to the environment and my family. Does anyone know of gentle cleaning methods or household remedies that are especially suitable for the coated surfaces of the MALM series? It would be helpful if you could also explain the proper procedure to prevent streaks or damage. Thank you in advance!

I used to work with a lot of strong cleaning agents, but the furniture didn’t look any better afterward. This natural approach with water, microfiber cloths, and a little vinegar is gentler on the furniture and also feels better for your conscience. 🙂 Take it in small steps and listen to your furniture – it can sometimes be sensitive.

It is important to wipe again afterward with clean water and a dry cloth. This helps avoid residues that can cause streaks. Also, please do not use scouring pads or steel wool, as these can scratch the surface.

The goal is to protect the environment and avoid damaging the furniture. Interesting point. However, I wonder whether the occasional use of mild household cleaners really has significant environmental impacts, considering their biodegradable breakdown products. Does anyone have reliable studies or sources that evaluate the environmental friendliness more precisely? Sometimes the risk from micro-scratches and overuse of cleaning agents might be greater than the actual ecological footprint of some products in the end.

Whether the occasional use of mild household cleaners really has such significant environmental impacts Thank you for the question; it actually makes me think. For me, it’s not only about environmental protection but also about keeping my family safe from unnecessary chemicals. Perhaps it’s wise to find a good balance between effectiveness and gentleness. How often do you clean your Malm furniture to keep it maintained without overusing cleaning products?
