Hello everyone,

I’m about to assemble the IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to do it as efficiently and neatly as possible. That’s why I have a question for the community: Which tools are specifically and genuinely helpful when assembling the HEMNES furniture?

Of course, I have the Allen key that IKEA usually includes. But I’m wondering if there are other tools that make assembly easier or even save time, such as a cordless drill, small pliers, or special screwdrivers.

I’m also interested to know if some tools are truly essential because they offer better screw handling or make the assembly safer.

Maybe you can also point out any potential pitfalls during assembly where the right tools are crucial.

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

That’s a good and important question, because although the assembly of the HEMNES is systematically designed, having the right tools can make the process noticeably easier.

My recommendation is to use the following tools:
- A high-quality Phillips screwdriver (PH2), since the screwdrivers included by IKEA are more for emergencies.
- A small cordless drill with adjustable torque. Especially when connecting wooden parts, you shouldn’t apply too much force to avoid driving the screws too deep or damaging the wood.
- A rubber mallet (or a regular hammer with a cloth as a cushion) to tap in the dowels without risking splinters.
- Pliers or flat-nose pliers, which help when you need to hold or adjust dowels or screws.
- Optionally, a protractor or carpenter’s square to ensure everything is precisely at right angles.

Important: Try not to assemble the furniture on an uneven surface, as this makes accurate work more difficult and can put strain on screws and joints.

I’m curious how you plan to approach the assembly? Will you be working alone or with someone else? Many tasks are easier with two people, especially when handling larger parts. Also, the cordless drill becomes almost essential in that case.

In general, lacking the right tools often slows down the assembly and can lead to avoidable mistakes.

I find such recommendations a bit exaggerated. If you can’t assemble the HEMNES cabinet with a cordless screwdriver right away, either you don’t know what you’re doing or you’re just looking for an easy way out.

IKEA designed the furniture so that practically all screws can be turned easily with the included hex key. This isn’t a failure but the design principle behind it: simplicity and minimal tool requirements.

And honestly, why over-optimize the energy effort? A little manual work is part of the process.

Besides, it’s easier to tell when the screw is properly tight because I know people who have completely stripped screws using a cordless screwdriver.

In short: a bit of pragmatism, please—no need to reach for a high-tech tool right away.

You’re right, and I also think that’s important for anyone who only assembles furniture occasionally.

However, I would add that some tools are still highly recommended, especially if you don’t build only once a year and want to save your back.

My tip for beginners:
- Be sure to use the included hex key, but practice with it beforehand so you don’t waste time fumbling.
- If you have the option, try using a cordless drill with low torque—it’s easier on your hands.
- I would also recommend a small rubber mallet to gently fit wooden parts together without damaging them.

It’s also important to always start by loosely screwing in all screws, then gradually tighten them. This prevents stress and ensures a better fit.

Take your time to carefully read the instructions and don’t rush. That’s often the best help.

In short:

- Allen key (included)
- Cordless screwdriver with torque control (optional)
- Rubber mallet
- Square

That’s all you need for a solid assembly. A cordless screwdriver saves time, but it’s possible without one.
