Some time ago, I bought the IKEA Billy shelf unit with drawers. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that some of the drawers don’t close as smoothly as they did at first. It seems this is because the runners or drawer slides need to be adjusted, as they are slightly misaligned or get stuck when closing.
My question to the experienced users in this forum is: What is the best way to adjust the Billy drawers so they close smoothly and evenly again? Is there a specific trick when installing the runners or an official procedure to ensure the optimal fit?
I would appreciate detailed tips, including potential pitfalls or common mistakes during the adjustment process, so I can avoid unnecessary effort. Thanks in advance!

My question to the experienced users here in the forum: What is the best way to adjust BILLY drawers so that they close smoothly and evenly again?First, I would question whether the problem is really due to the adjustment, or if the quality of the slides or the installation itself might be lacking. BILLY is a mass-produced product, and tolerances can definitely occur.
Have you checked if the slides are mounted perfectly straight and at the same height on the side panel? Warping of the wood or installation errors could also cause the drawer to not operate properly.
Adjusting the drawer slides usually involves loosening the screws and slightly shifting the guide rails. It is important to ensure that both sides are aligned absolutely parallel to avoid binding.
Otherwise, there are sometimes small plastic gliders that can be placed under the drawer to improve movement. If there are major discrepancies, I recommend replacing the slides or critically reviewing the installation.

IKEA doesn't provide luxury or high-end furniture, but affordable solutions. If fine-tuning causes problems, it’s usually due to incorrect handling.
I would argue that anyone who isn’t careful will easily bend the tracks or attach them incorrectly.
And if someone has no experience, they should probably skip the after-sales adjustment altogether; often, replacing the drawer or part is the better option.
I recommend working very carefully and, if needed, placing a slatted frame or straightedge during assembly to avoid mistakes – this can save a lot of trouble.
I would like to add that with BILLY drawers, it is important to apply gentle pressure. Avoid forcing the drawer closed if it feels stuck.
Here are a few steps that have helped me based on experience:
1. Carefully remove the drawer.
2. Check whether the drawer slides are securely and horizontally mounted on the side wall.
3. If the slides are loose or not exactly parallel, loosen the screws and align them using a spirit level or ruler.
4. Tighten the screws again.
5. If the problem is with the drawer itself, check that the plastic locking mechanism on the side of the slides is properly seated.
6. Reinsert the drawer and test its movement.
Sometimes adding small plastic glides to the underside of the drawer on the sides can improve sliding.
If the drawer still doesn’t operate smoothly, it may be worth removing the slides completely and reinstalling them—making sure they are perfectly parallel.
These kinds of adjustments are usually straightforward if you take your time.

Rails mounted exactly straight and at the same height on the side wallThat is indeed the key point. I would even go further and say that due to wood warping in BILLY shelves, especially under heavy loads, shifts can occur that need to be readjusted. Therefore, I recommend regularly checking the screws on all drawers and making minimal corrections as needed.

Gentle pressure when closing and proper installation of the plastic clip mechanismsI fully agree. The plastic part is often overlooked, even though it is responsible for smooth opening and closing of the drawers.
Because of the design of BILLY, it is advisable to adjust the rails and drawers every six months briefly to prevent permanent damage.
