Annikakau30 Sep 2022 16:12Hello everyone, I would like to repaint my IKEA Malm dressers, but I have heard about and personally experienced blistering in the paint layer. My question is: How can I repaint Malm dressers without bubbles forming under the paint surface? Which preparation, type of paint, and technique are best suited? I have already considered sanding, primer, and different types of paint, but I am unsure how to effectively prevent bubbles. Maybe you have experience or tips that could help me achieve a smooth and durable finish. Thanks in advance!

It’s important to sand the wood thoroughly first, then make sure it’s completely dust-free – dust is the enemy of any paint job! For the primer, I recommend a very thin consistency so it can penetrate well into the pores. Also, apply several thin coats instead of one thick one. Avoid painting too quickly in dusty or humid environments. Bubbles can also occur from drying too fast, so it’s best to work at moderate temperatures. Good luck, you’ll do great! 😉
Exactly, several thin layers are better – this really helps prevent bubbles. Another tip from me: after sanding, wipe well with a damp cloth and let the dresser dry completely before continuing. Often, residual moisture still causes bubbles. And it’s best to use a spray can or a paint with good thinning properties, as this results in smooth surfaces. 😊

Alberto5130 Sep 2022 20:23I can confirm how frustrating blistering is – I’ve experienced it before with MALM dressers as well. For me, it turned out that besides proper surface preparation, patience during drying is even more important than expected. What helped in my case was lightly sanding the finish between coats whenever small blisters appeared, smoothing the surface, and then applying another thin layer. You really notice that it’s a process that takes time, but in the end, it’s worth the effort.
