Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble the IKEA Brimnes furniture and would like to know if there are any special tools or devices that make the assembly easier or even necessary. Specifically, my question is: Are there any special assembly tools recommended or specifically designed by IKEA for the Brimnes model, or can the assembly be done easily with standard tools like a screwdriver and hammer? I want to work as efficiently as possible without unnecessary effort, so it would be helpful to know if I need to get any special tools beforehand.

Thanks for your insights!

From my experience, IKEA generally does not provide special tools beyond standard ones. However, an Allen key is often included. My question would be whether IKEA actually uses proprietary tools that standardize and speed up the process, such as a special cordless drill attachment or assembly wrench that cannot simply be used for other furniture.

I assume that in practice, such specialized tools are the exception. However, evidence or concrete experience on this would be interesting.

For the Brimnes, you only need a screwdriver, a hammer, and the supplied Allen key. No special tools are required.

I assembled my Brimnes shelf last week and can say that the included tools are perfectly sufficient! There is a small Allen key included, which works great. No special professional equipment needed! 🙂 If you get stuck at any point, just read the instructions again – everything is doable, good luck!

That is correct. For IKEA furniture like Brimnes, an Allen key (often size 4 mm (5/32 inch)) is typically included, as the assembly screws are designed for it. No special tools are required, partly because the design is modular and intended to be easy to assemble.

In addition to the Allen key, a simple Phillips screwdriver and possibly a hammer for positioning wall plugs are usually sufficient.

However, I recommend having a small cordless screwdriver with an Allen bit ready when assembling furniture frequently, as it significantly speeds up the work, even though IKEA does not specifically sell a screwdriver for Brimnes.

Mekore, if your question also refers to the quality and durability of the piece of furniture: standard tools provide sufficient accuracy for assembly. Specialized equipment would only be beneficial if you wanted to, for example, precisely re-cut threads or specifically adjust the material. However, this is not necessary for standard assembly and could even cause damage. So, with a screwdriver, hammer, and the supplied Allen key, you are well equipped technically.
