Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some Malm furniture from Ikea and have noticed that the finish is increasingly peeling off in certain areas, especially on heavily used edges and surfaces. I understand that the material and surface treatment of Malm pieces can be somewhat delicate.
I am particularly interested in proven methods or tips to prevent finish peeling on Malm furniture in the long term. I mean both preventative measures and care tips that protect the surfaces without causing damage. Are there any special sealants, cleaning products, or handling techniques that have proven to be effective?
I would appreciate your knowledgeable recommendations or experiences with similar issues. Thanks in advance!

Transparent, self-adhesive edge protectors that are hardly noticeable, Sounds good. Do you have a specific product name or manufacturer that works particularly well with Malm furniture?

Any application of additional sealants on an already laminated or foil-covered surface may potentially affect the adhesion of the existing film. That’s an important point I hadn’t considered.
I will focus on cleaning and mechanics and appreciate any further practical tips, especially regarding gentle cleaning without chemicals.
To maintain and prevent paint peeling on Malm furniture, I recommend using only pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for delicate surfaces during cleaning.
There are also special waxes and care products for laminated furniture that provide a protective micro-barrier against moisture and abrasion without damaging the paint or laminate.
Before use, always test the product on an inconspicuous area, especially if it will be left on for an extended period. This can help prevent color changes or reduced adhesion.

Specifically cleaning agents – simple soap solution or special products?A soap solution made from pure, mild liquid soap concentrate (without additives, fragrances, or colorants) is usually sufficient and gentlest. Professionals also use special furniture cleaners with a neutral pH, which are available from specialty stores.

Discreet protective films against mechanical wear?Such films do exist, but they are often visible. An alternative is felt pads on the underside of items or clear edge protectors for furniture edges, which are very discreet and provide good protection.
As an addition: Avoid using rubbing alcohol or harsh solvents. These are not suitable for laminated surfaces.
Instead, use a mild dish soap and water mixture and dry the furniture immediately.
For areas with heavy use, it is better to use protective films or edge protectors.
