ᐅ The MALM dresser squeaks with every movement – how can I stop this?

Hello everyone, I have a Malm chest of drawers from IKEA that squeaks with even the slightest movement. The noise comes from the drawer area when opening them or even just lightly tapping the front. It has become quite annoying, especially during quiet moments.

I have already tried inspecting the runners and hinges but couldn’t find anything unusual. None of the screws appear loose, and there is no visible wear. Does anyone have experience with this issue and can advise how to permanently stop the squeaking? What kind of maintenance or lubricant would be best for this? Is there a specific set of steps I should follow to avoid damaging the chest of drawers?

I appreciate any tips!

Try using liquid silicone spray instead of WD-40

Thanks for the tip! So far, I have only used regular machine oil because I thought that would be best. Silicone spray sounds more reasonable.

Are the guides made of metal or plastic?

The guides are made of metal with a plastic cover.

Maybe the dresser is under some tension?

That’s definitely possible. The dresser is standing on a laminate floor, so I can try to slightly level it and see if that improves things.

I’ll get some silicone spray and clean the tracks. Thanks to everyone who has already responded! If that doesn’t help, I’ll report back with more detailed observations.

Glad the tips are helpful! 🙂 A quick additional note: also check the small plastic gliders on the undersides of the drawers – if they are damaged or dirty, they can squeak or scratch.

Just wipe them clean or replace them if they are too worn out.

Sometimes it’s the small details that cause the big noises.

Wishing you continued success!

That sounds like a classic case of a small annoying culprit!

That’s exactly what I did with my Malm – and it was amazing to see how the squeaking completely stopped!

Don’t get discouraged, you can fix this! Fingers crossed it works out just as well for you 🙂

That confirms my assumption and is good because silicone spray almost always produces good results in this case.

One more technical note: With plastic-metal guides, noises can also be caused by slight movements of the plastic parts on the metal, which are reduced after lubrication.

I would suggest opening and closing the dresser several times without the drawers after the first lubrication to distribute the lubricant well.

Please also note: If the squeaking sounds more like creaking or scratching, twisted or damaged clips of the guide might be the cause. In that case, replacing these parts would be advisable.
