I have a question that has been on my mind for some time, and I hope to find some helpful experiences and well-founded advice here:

Which care products do you believe actually extend the lifespan of IKEA Besta furniture?

I am particularly interested in which cleaning agents or special care products you use for the surfaces, edges, and possibly the metal fittings to prevent wear, discoloration, or water damage.

Recommendations on the proper handling, such as the frequency of care or the dosage of products, would also be much appreciated—especially since I want to avoid aggressive substances that could damage or make the surfaces porous.

If anyone knows specific products that are especially compatible with the material composition of the BESTA series, I would be grateful for any tips. I also value observations and personal experiences to better understand what best protects the material while maintaining its appearance.

Good morning!

That’s a very good question you asked, teoli. The BESTA furniture from IKEA is mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard, which you should definitely keep in mind when caring for it.

1. Cleaning:
- Preferably use a mild dish soap with warm water.
- Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can make the surface dull.
- A soft cloth is ideal; microfiber cloths work very well.

2. Maintenance:
- To protect and refresh the surface, I recommend special furniture care products for melamine-coated surfaces or mild surface cleaners with conditioning effects.
- Wax-based products are usually unnecessary and can leave residues.

3. Metal fittings:
- A little oil (e.g., sewing machine oil or WD-40) can help keep moving parts smooth and prevent rust. Apply sparingly.

4. Frequency:
- Regular wiping is usually sufficient. More intensive care is needed every few months.

If you want, I can share some product names that I personally use. But the most important advice is: never use too much water, as it should not soak in to avoid swelling.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I can also explain common mistakes and their consequences if you wish.

I can only agree with that. Unfortunately, this happened to me with my first cabinet when I thought I was cleaning it thoroughly with plenty of water and a regular cleaning agent. After a few weeks, the edges started to deform unsightly.

At first, I was quite disappointed and worried that the furniture might become unusable. After all, BESTA furniture isn’t extremely expensive but also not disposable.

By now, I basically only use a damp cloth (well wrung out) and occasionally very mild care products specifically designed for coated furniture.

What also helps: I now clean the furniture more deliberately and slowly, taking time to let each layer dry completely, avoiding excessive rubbing, and not treating stains with harsh methods right away.

Does anyone have recommendations for such mild cleaning products that are also environmentally friendly? That would be important to me as well.

For clarification: BESTA furniture is made from particleboard with a melamine resin surface, which makes it resistant to scratches and moisture but not impervious.

The following care recommendations based on materials and tests are advisable:

- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth with a neutral, water-based cleaner.
- Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals (solvents, bleach, ammonia) as they can damage the coating.
- For the surface, special furniture care products compatible with melamine resin and polymer-based are suitable, leaving a protective film without stickiness.
- Metal parts occasionally require light lubrication with wax or silicone oil to prevent corrosion and sticking.
- Dust and dirt should be removed regularly to avoid micro-scratches.

These recommendations are based on manufacturer information and practical tests.

Conclusion: There is no need to use aggressive products; regular gentle cleaning and occasional maintenance are sufficient to extend the furniture’s lifespan.
