ᐅ Malm bed frame falls apart when sitting – how can I reinforce it?

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my Ikea Malm bed. Every time I sit on it, the connection between the slatted base support board and the side panels seems to become unstable – in the worst case, the bed practically falls apart. It is properly assembled; I followed the instructions and tightened all the screws. However, the connection points apparently aren’t stable enough when weight is applied.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has practical experience or advice on how to stabilize my Malm bed – without replacing the entire bed or using unsuitable, superficial fixes. I am thinking of possible reinforcements, strengthening the materials, or alternative fastening methods. For example, are there special brackets, additional screws, wooden strips, or other tricks that significantly improve the construction and better distribute the load?

Thanks in advance for any specific suggestions!

This is great, so many tips coming together here! 🙂

I had a similar problem and also placed rubber pads under the bed legs to prevent tipping.

This combination of metal brackets and wooden slats made the bed really sturdy. You’ll see how much more enjoyable it is when everything fits firmly and nothing wobbles!

Good luck, you’ve got this!

This is the most important point: a permanent and solid solution is far better than a quick patch.

I would also like to add that installing a center support leg (an additional support in the middle of the bed frame) can significantly reduce stress on the sides – if your model allows it. The center leg can be made of wood or metal; the main thing is that it stands firmly on the floor and lifts the slatted frame. This greatly reduces the load on the sides.

Hello plo-patric,

a few additional points on the topic:

1. Check material quality: Especially with older Malm beds, the plywood may have dried out or swollen, which reduces stability. If the material becomes brittle, it can help to fill critical spots with wood filler.

2. Screw quality: Sometimes the original screws are too short or thin. Replacing them with longer, thicker wood screws can noticeably improve stability.

3. Cross braces: In addition to the slats on the sides, it makes sense to add cross braces underneath the slatted frame to prevent sagging.

4. Regular inspection: Even after reinforcement, it is advisable to regularly check all connections and tighten them if necessary.

That is a very useful addition! I would recommend aligning the center beam precisely and securely fixing the support leg to the floor.
