Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Brimnes chest of drawers set from Ikea and wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with the drawer slides – especially if there are any known defects or common weak points with these drawer runners?

I noticed that the front drawer moves a bit stiffly and sometimes even sticks slightly, which I don’t think is normal. Since Ikea is usually known for good value and reliability, I want to make sure I haven’t simply overlooked an assembly error or if there might be material tolerances or issues with the slides that often cause problems.

Does anyone have specific experience or advice on whether the Brimnes drawer slides frequently fail, or if I should contact customer service directly? Are there any tips for fixing this without having to replace the entire mechanism?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Basically, the drawer slides in Ikea Brimnes are designed as simple metal or plastic runners.

I am not aware of any specific common defects, but some users report that the metal slides can bend at the guide rollers or the plastic parts may break if overloaded.

The most frequent issues usually result from overloading or improper installation, which can cause the slides to stick. Therefore, it is recommended to:
- Keep the load within the manufacturer’s specified limits,
- Regularly clean the slide rails (no dirt or wood chips),
- And carefully check the correct installation, for example, the alignment of the rails.

If the slide sticks, adjusting the screws or realigning the drawer often helps. Replacement parts can be easily ordered from Ikea. A complete failure of a slide is rare; wear or installation errors are more common.

I had similar issues with my Brimnes; the rollers were not properly adjusted.

Simply remove the drawer and check the runners. Most of the time, the problem is caused by bent rails or dirt inside.

A common issue with Brimnes is that the tracks are not very durable.

With frequent use, the plastic rollers can break or the track itself may bend. Replacement is sometimes necessary.

No known common defects. It is important not to pack anything too heavy.

Otherwise, it won’t take long before it gets stuck.

Hello everyone,

Regarding the Brimnes drawer slides, I would like to add a few points that are especially important for installation and long-term use:

1. Installation accuracy: The slides must be mounted perfectly level and parallel. Even small deviations can cause jamming.
2. Weight capacity: The drawers are designed for everyday items. Overloading, for example with heavy books or tools, leads to faster damage.
3. Material fatigue: Plastic parts on the rollers wear down due to friction. With heavy use, the material can become brittle and eventually break.
4. Cleaning: Dust or debris in the track increases friction and can cause malfunctions.

My recommendations:
- Check alignment after installation
- Use a silicone-based lubricant on the tracks
- Consider replacing the plastic rollers with more durable alternatives, which Ikea unfortunately does not offer directly.

This way, you can ensure a long service life for the drawer slides.
