Hello everyone, I have several Malm furniture pieces from Ikea, and unfortunately, I often find stains on the surfaces, especially on the white painted parts. Since I value the furniture a lot and want it to last a long time, I would like to know: How can I gently and effectively clean Malm furniture when there are stains, without damaging the surface or affecting the paint?

I would appreciate tips on which cleaning products are suitable, whether any special techniques or tools should be used, and if different types of stains (e.g., water stains, grease stains, ballpoint pen marks) require different approaches. Advice on regular maintenance to protect the material in the long term is also welcome. Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Owenpu,

For cleaning Malm furniture, I generally recommend using a mild cleaning agent based on pH-neutral soap or special furniture cleaners designed for painted surfaces.

For stains, first gently wipe with a damp, soft cloth – never use abrasive sponges or scouring agents, as these can damage the surface.

For stubborn stains, a mixture of lukewarm water and a small amount of dish soap works well. Make sure to wring the cloth thoroughly to avoid excessive moisture.

Important: After cleaning, wipe again with clean water and dry the surface to remove any water residue that could cause water spots.

Different types of stains often require specific treatments:
- Ballpoint pen: Carefully use rubbing alcohol or alcohol-based cleaners, but always test first on an inconspicuous area.
- Grease stains: A mild grease-cutting dish soap or a special grease remover can be effective.
- Water spots: These usually result from standing water, so always wipe off immediately and dry.

Regular maintenance can be done with a microfiber cloth – this dusts the furniture without causing scratches.

Please avoid aggressive or solvent-based cleaners, as they can damage or dull the surface.

I hope this helps.

Hello Owenpu, I basically agree with KARJU and would like to add that it can be helpful to first identify the exact type of stain before cleaning.

In my experience, this is crucial because, for example, ink stains on painted furniture can be really tricky. If you use spirits or alcohol as suggested, I would first test it on an edge or the back to make sure the finish does not become dull or patchy.

For everyday stains like coffee or fruit juice, a cloth with some warm water and mild soap often helps. Make sure not to soak the surface.

If you have stains with a particularly high risk (like candle wax), I would first check online or contact Ikea support for any special recommendations.

Be cautious with home remedies like vinegar or citric acid! They can damage the surface.

Basically: regularly wiping with a dry microfiber cloth helps remove dust and light dirt and prevents stains. This way, your Malm furniture will stay looking good in the long term.

Good morning,

I would like to go into more detail about the care and cleaning of Malm furniture, as proper treatment is crucial for painted surfaces to maintain their appearance.

First, a brief explanation: Malm furniture is usually made from engineered wood panels coated with a layer of paint. This surface is durable but not indestructible. Therefore, cleaning should always be done gently.

Procedure for stains:

1. Preparation: Remove loose dust or dirt with a dry microfiber cloth.

2. Light stains: Use a damp (not wet!) cloth with a little neutral dish soap—never soak or saturate the surface.

3. Stubborn stains, such as ballpoint pen marks or other writing:
- First, test an alcohol-based cleaner like isopropanol on a hidden spot.
- Important: Excess alcohol should be wiped off immediately with clean water to avoid damage to the paint.

4. For grease stains:
- Use a mild degreaser suitable for painted surfaces, such as a specialized furniture cleaner that breaks down grease.

5. After cleaning:
- Remove any cleaning residues with a damp cloth, then wipe dry with a soft cloth.

6. Care:
- In addition to cleaning, the surface can occasionally be treated with a special furniture care oil or wax that protects the paint layer and reduces minor scratches.

One more tip: Avoid using paper towels or rough sponges, as they can cause microscopic scratches over time, making the surface look dull.

A question for Owenpu: What is the current condition of your furniture (e.g., fresh stains, already dried-in, or are there dull areas)? This might influence the best cleaning approach.

Thank you for the helpful tips so far!

I have a follow-up question: How exactly should I dampen the cloth? Should the cloth be only slightly moist, or is it okay if it releases a bit of water? Sometimes I feel that too much moisture could damage the paint finish.

Regarding the use of alcohol-based cleaner for ink pen stains:

Where can I typically find isopropanol in everyday life if I don’t have anything specific on hand? Would an ordinary alcohol-based stain remover from a drugstore be sufficient? Are there any brands that are particularly suitable or not recommended?

Also, I have some water stains that leave faint white edges in some places. Would it be enough to dry the surface thoroughly afterward, or is a different treatment necessary?

Thanks very much for the exchange and advice!
