Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase with a smooth finish from IKEA and am now wondering how to clean it best without damaging the surface. I am particularly interested in which cleaning products and methods I should definitely avoid because they might cause scratches, discoloration, or other damage. Does anyone have tips or experience on how to care for such a smooth, coated surface? I am mainly concerned with long-term maintenance, especially what not to do to prevent damage over time.

Under no circumstances should abrasive cleaners or harsh detergents be used, as they can dull the surface and cause scratches. It is best to use a soft, damp cloth and mild dish soap.

Very important: Do not use sharp objects or abrasive sponges. The surface is quite sensitive, so only gentle cleaning will work.

I completely understand your concern! Smooth surfaces like those on BILLY shelves are particularly sensitive to strong chemicals or abrasive cleaners. I recommend avoiding solvents such as alcohol, acetone, or harsh all-purpose cleaners, as they can damage the paint or melamine coating. Using damp microfiber cloths is usually best—they lift dirt without scratching. If you encounter a stubborn stain, it’s better to try gently wiping it with some lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap, which is usually enough.

Thanks for the tip! Are there any natural household remedies that should be avoided on the smooth surface? Sometimes you hear about vinegar or baking soda as cleaning agents. Are these unsuitable, or can they be used safely?

I once tried using vinegar on smooth furniture, but it not only has a strong smell, it can also damage the surface. Baking soda is also somewhat abrasive because it scrubs. I would be very careful with these – it’s better to use soft cloths and gentle cleaning agents. For me, it’s important that cleaning is quick and gentle so the furniture stays beautiful for a long time.
