Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and want to use them as sustainably and durably as possible. My specific question is: How can you use, modify, or maintain IKEA Metod cabinets to extend their lifespan while minimizing material waste caused by buying new ones? Are there proven methods, such as redesigning the modules or adding extra storage solutions, that help give the cabinets a second life? And what about disassembly and reuse if you move or want to rearrange the furniture differently?
I would greatly appreciate practical tips and any experiences with upcycling or repairs!
Thanks in advance!

I find this question very important because many of us replace IKEA furniture at some point, even though it is often still in good condition.
To use Metod furniture sustainably, I have had good experiences with not simply throwing away cabinets but reusing them when moving or redesigning. One tip is to redesign the interior flexibly, for example by using different inserts or shelves that can be easily swapped to reorganize storage space. This way, the furniture structure remains useful in the long term.
I also always make sure to repair any damage immediately. Small scratches and chipped edges can often be fixed with wood filler or special repair kits, which significantly extends both the appearance and the lifespan.
You summed it up perfectly. That’s exactly the point – I’m still working on handling my furniture more sustainably and look forward to more tips here!

To use IKEA Metod furniture truly sustainably, I recommend a multi-step approach that includes planning, maintenance, and adaptation:
- Planning: Before assembly, carefully consider which modules are actually needed. The versatility of the Metod series allows you to combine elements such as shelves, drawers, or corner solutions individually. This helps avoid unnecessary surplus.
- Maintenance: Wood-based materials like those in Metod can swell or get damaged under improper conditions. Therefore, it’s worth ensuring a as dry an environment as possible. For cleaning, mild detergents are important, as aggressive chemicals can damage the surface.
- Repair: For small damages, I suggest using repair kits with wood filler, color-matched wood markers, and, if needed, a thin layer of clear varnish. These not only reduce visible flaws but also prevent further damage.
- Remodeling and reuse: If your living situation changes, it makes sense to carefully disassemble the furniture parts. Using a cordless screwdriver with torque control prevents over-tightening screws. When reinstalling, check for signs of wear at the joints and possibly avoid double screwing to keep the parts reusable.
- Upcycling: Individual parts can be creatively repurposed, such as extending work surfaces, shelves, or even making furniture for children’s rooms that require less stress.
Exactly, that’s crucial! I’d like to know if you or others here have experience with specific products for the Metod fronts?
And arinbi, have you planned to completely remodel the furniture at some point or just adapt it? That can require very different approaches.

Super exciting discussion here! 😊 I’m really impressed by the flexibility of the Metod series and refreshed my kitchen completely after 3 years with new fronts and handles instead of replacing everything! This saved a lot of money and is better for the environment too.
That’s exactly what I did! I built a small sideboard for my living room from a few old drawers. Very easy and looks great.
It’s also important to pay attention to sustainable details when buying, such as fronts made from certified wood and as little plastic as possible in the fittings.
So, let’s keep going and continue sharing ideas on how to get more out of these pieces of furniture – not just the usual way of buying new and throwing away old! This really makes sense and helps to appreciate what you already have.
