Fearchibal1 Nov 2023 09:23Hello everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Hemnes furniture and plan to place it in my kitchen area as well as in the slightly more humid entrance area. Since these pieces are made of solid wood or MDF with a real wood veneer, I am concerned about how to best protect them from moisture caused by cooking fumes, occasional splashes, or increased humidity.
My question is: What measures and additional protective treatments are most effective and long-lasting for safeguarding the surface of IKEA Hemnes furniture against moisture, without compromising the appearance or functionality of the pieces? What care or maintenance would you particularly recommend to prevent mold growth or damage over time?
I look forward to well-informed experiences and tips from you!

Hello Fearchibal,
regarding your question on how to best protect IKEA HEMNES furniture from moisture: The HEMNES series is mostly made of solid pine, which is naturally somewhat more resistant to moisture than particleboard. However, wood that is sensitive to moisture should always be treated with care.
My advice:
- Use a clear, water-repellent wood oil or a special furniture wax suitable for pine wood. These protect the surface without affecting the appearance.
- Make sure to refresh this protective layer regularly, about every 6 months, as it wears off over time.
- Avoid standing water and ensure sufficient air circulation around the furniture.
- For HEMNES pieces with a painted finish, do not use harsh cleaning agents; simply wipe them with a damp cloth and dry immediately.
This will help prevent swelling caused by moisture over time and reduce the risk of mold.

Hey Fearchibal,
I can only agree with anken and add a few practical tips!
This is very important, because at least in my kitchen, there is often a lot of steam, and I notice that the wood suffers if it isn’t properly ventilated.
In addition, I use small, self-adhesive felt pads with water-repellent properties under the furniture. These prevent the furniture from sitting directly on the often damp floor and create a minimal gap.
I have also found that regularly polishing with beeswax provides a protective layer to the wood. While it’s not a miracle cure, it definitely reduces moisture absorption and gives the furniture a really nice shine 😉.
One small tip: apply furniture oils preferably outdoors or in very well-ventilated areas—the smell can be quite strong!
Good luck with your HEMNES furniture!

Just a brief addition regarding care instructions:
That is absolutely true; I also recommend applying the oil at least with gloves and in a well-ventilated environment. Additionally, it’s best to test the oil first on an inconspicuous spot to see if it significantly changes the color of the HEMNES surface.
For moisture protection in the kitchen, sealing with clear varnish can also help – however, this is a modification that alters the original furniture and requires some DIY skills. If anyone has experience with this, I would appreciate your feedback.
