ALFREDODO14 Jul 2021 08:37Hello everyone, I have a serious problem with my Billy shelf: the screws keep coming loose after a short period of use. This causes the shelf to become unstable, and I have to keep tightening it. I usually use the original screws and tighten them with a regular screwdriver. Does anyone have tips or proven methods to permanently prevent the screws from loosening on a Billy shelf? I’m especially interested in whether there are specific types of screws, thread-locking compounds, or techniques that could help. Thanks!
Hello Alfredo, the issue with loose screws in Billy shelves is quite common. This is often due to the combination of lightweight wood-based material and vibrations from use. In addition to thread lockers, you can also use special dowels that provide better grip in the particleboard. I recommend not overtightening the screws, as this can cause the material to tear out. If possible, I also suggest using wing nuts or metal brackets for additional stabilization.

The issue with loose screws in Billy shelves is quite well known. Exactly, the main cause is the nature of the particle board, which under regular load and vibration does not provide the best screw connection. Using thread-locking compounds (such as medium-strength threadlocker, e.g., Loctite 243) combined with washers significantly improves holding power and prevents loosening. Alternatively, larger screws can be used if the holes are adjusted accordingly. Additionally, a torque setting should be used that does not damage the material but is tight enough. The common cause is screws being tightened too loosely and lacking protection against vibration.Similar topics
