Hello everyone, I have the following problem with my IKEA Kallax shelves: The doors only close if I push them very hard. Normally, they should close gently or latch softly. I have no idea whether it’s due to the hinges, the door alignment, or if the soft-close mechanism might be defective. Is there a way to loosen or adjust the mechanism so the doors close more easily without requiring much force? I would appreciate any advice on how to approach this problem step by step, without having to buy new hinges right away. Thanks in advance!

That sounds really annoying, I had something similar with my Kallax. In my experience, it often has to do with the alignment of the doors or the hinges being adjusted too tightly. Sometimes loosening the screws just a little bit helps to reduce the tension. But I totally understand how frustrating that can be. You don’t want to have to force the doors shut all the time. How long have you had the shelving unit? Have there been any recent changes in its construction or the weight in the compartments? Sometimes that can affect how the doors sit.

This is exactly the point to start from. IKEA Kallax hinges are usually clip-on hinges that allow adjustment in height, depth, and sideways. If the doors only close with a lot of pressure, it is often because the door is flush but the hinge’s mechanical spring is too tight or the hinge cup is not seated perfectly.

A systematic approach would be:
1. Slightly open the door and loosen the screws of the hinges on the inside of the cabinet slightly.
2. Carefully adjust the door so it neither sticks nor hangs too loosely.
3. Tighten the screws again while checking if the mechanism closes more smoothly.

Additionally, you can check if any damping elements, if present, are stuck or dirty. Sometimes a very light spray of silicone lubricant (not WD-40, as it is usually too aggressive) on the hinge contact points helps.

Important: Do not apply too much force, as this can damage the plastic parts. How much experience do you have with adjusting cabinet hardware like this?

Technically, Kallax doors are designed to be mounted using clip hinges that include a small spring to assist with closing. If the doors only close with strong pressure, it usually indicates a defect or misalignment of the spring or hinge attachment.

Recommendation: First, check the two screws on the hinge plate that attach the hinge to the back of the shelving unit. A slight loosening can reduce the closing force. Also, check the adjustment screws on the hinges themselves, which allow for horizontal and vertical alignment.

If adjusting does not improve the situation, the hinges may be worn out. Replacement parts are affordable and available from IKEA.

One more tip: As far as I know, Kallax doors do not have built-in soft-closing mechanisms. However, incorrect or misadjusted magnetic catches can also cause increased closing force.

Check if the screws on the hinges are tight. Loosen them slightly and readjust the doors. It also helps to treat the hinges with some silicone spray.

clip hinges that allow height, depth, and lateral adjustment

In addition, I recommend taking a systematic approach when adjusting the Kallax doors to ensure all influencing factors are considered:

First, adjust horizontally to align the doors parallel to the cabinet frame. Next, adjust vertically so the doors don’t sag or sit too low. Finally, adjust the depth by changing the distance to the shelf frame, which mainly affects the closing behavior.

If the gap is too small, it increases the closing resistance – in this case, slightly loosen the screws and move the hinge inward or outward to enable smooth closing.

Important: Always handle the hinge screws gently and avoid using excessive force to prevent damage to the plastic parts and the spring mechanism.

I’m curious how precisely the doors fit – are they flush on all sides?

If so, the closing mechanism itself might be worn or dirty. Kallax doors don’t come with built-in cushioning by default, but some people install magnetic catches, which should also be checked.
