Hello everyone, I recently noticed some scratched wooden parts on my IKEA Platsa system, which unfortunately have suffered quite a bit from normal use. Since these parts have a veneered surface, I’m wondering how to properly repair such scratches without later color differences or surface damage becoming noticeable. It’s especially important for me to know which products are suitable for the repair, whether special wood repair kits should be used, or if other methods like treating the surface with furniture polish or fillers make sense. I’m looking forward to practical tips for an effective and visually appealing repair!
Regarding the repair of scratched IKEA PLATSA wooden parts with a veneered surface, I recommend a precise approach. First, the area should be cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt and grease. For minor scratches, repair markers work well to fill and color-match the damaged spots. These markers usually contain waxes or resins that fill the scratches and can be gently polished afterward. For deeper or larger damage, using wood filler that is color-matched is advisable. Once dry, the surface should be lightly sanded and finished with fine furniture polish or a clear lacquer to restore the protective layer. It is important that the products used match the veneer color exactly to avoid visible transitions. A common procedure is:
- Cleaning with a mild cleaner
- Applying repair marker or wood filler
- Fine finishing by sanding and polishing
- Sealing with furniture polish or lacquer
This method ensures a durable repair without compromising the appearance.

For minor scratches, repair pens work very well for filling and color-matching coverage.Nothing more to add to that. Additionally, with IKEA PLATSA, due to the industrial manufacturing of the veneer thickness, caution is necessary: sanding too much can quickly damage the paint or veneer. Therefore, I recommend carefully checking the depth of the damage before using sandpaper or filler materials. For superficial scratches, a combination of cleaning, a repair pen, and a final furniture polish is the best approach. It is also important to choose a repair pen that matches the wood color; IKEA PLATSA usually has a fairly light finish, so a light shade is advisable.
My experience with veneered Ikea parts like PLATSA shows that the success of a repair largely depends on the type and depth of the scratches. For an optimal repair, I recommend the following detailed procedure:
- Step 1: Check the lighting to assess the damage accurately. Shadows help make the depth and extent visible.
- Step 2: Clean with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and a mild cleaner to remove dust and grease – this is essential for adhesion of repair products.
- Step 3: For very fine scratches, use a color-matched furniture marker or wax stick that is melted or applied into the scratches. Apply multiple layers if needed and lightly polish between applications.
- Step 4: Lightly deburr deeper scratches with 600-grit sandpaper, avoiding heavy sanding—just smooth the edges.
- Step 5: Use wood filler or liquid wood putty that can be color-adjusted. Apply precisely with a small spatula and smooth out afterward.
- Step 6: After full drying, carefully level with 800-1000 grit sandpaper and remove dust.
- Step 7: Seal with an appropriate furniture varnish or wax, specially formulated for veneered surfaces, to make the finish more durable.
In conclusion: It is worth testing the color tone first on an inconspicuous spot. Using a small, clean sponge or soft cloth during the final treatment also helps achieve an even finish. If the damage covers a large area, replacing the veneer part through IKEA can be considered, if still available.

For very fine scratches, a color-matched furniture marker or wax stick that is melted or rubbed into the scratches works well.I also use this method quite often. Additionally, I recommend keeping the ambient temperature stable during the repair if possible, as some wax sticks can become brittle in too cold conditions. Another tip: Wax sticks are especially suitable for PLATSA parts because the surface is not solid wood, allowing the natural wood grain to be well preserved.
