Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from IKEA that I would like to modernize in appearance, as their classic white or birch veneer now looks a bit outdated. I am particularly interested in which methods and materials are best suited to update the surface and overall look to be more contemporary—without compromising stability and functionality. I’m open to suggestions such as painting, laminating, modifications, or even combinations with other furniture or decorative elements. It would also be helpful if you could share experiences with durable and low-maintenance solutions that can be done without professional workshop equipment. Who has practical tips or proven projects? Thanks in advance!

One more question: Do you already have a color scheme or material preferences so I can give you more targeted advice? Thanks for asking, Filippo. Basically, I lean towards a minimalist-modern style with clean lines and subdued colors, such as anthracite, matte black, or dark blue and gray tones. I want to avoid wood textures, as they often feel too rustic to me. Functionality should not be compromised: the shelf needs to remain stable, and the surfaces should be durable and easy to maintain. Additionally, I’m considering incorporating LED lighting as a feature.

If anyone’s interested, I’d be happy to write a step-by-step guide on how to professionally prepare and paint a Billy shelf. If you could share that guide, it would be really helpful!
Sure, here is a concise guide for updating by painting:
1. Completely empty the shelf and, if possible, disassemble it.
2. Sand the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 120-180) to remove grease and old paint residues; then clean with a dust cloth.
3. Apply a primer (preferably water-based for chipboard) to improve paint adhesion and prevent blistering.
4. After drying, lightly sand again with fine sandpaper (220) and remove dust.
5. Apply paint (matte or satin finish, water-based acrylic) in several thin layers, allowing each to dry thoroughly.
6. For extra protection, a clear coat can be added.
Important: Keep the workspace dust-free and avoid applying layers that are too thick, as this can cause the paint to crack.
If you have any questions about LED lighting, feel free to ask!

I tend to prefer a minimalist-modern look with clean lines and subdued colors, such as anthracite, matte black, or dark blue and gray tones. That’s a great choice! To emphasize the minimalist style, you could consider replacing handles with simple metal strips or even push-to-open mechanisms. This keeps the shelves looking clean and modern.
Regarding color selection, I also recommend testing on a sample piece. Dark colors tend to highlight small imperfections, so proper preparation is essential. Your lighting idea supports the aesthetic very well. Consider using warm white LEDs to create a cozy atmosphere—cool white can often appear too sterile.

For additional protection, a clear coat can be applied. This is very important; you might want to use a polyurethane clear coat, which makes the surface more resistant to scratches.
What is your timeline? Are you planning the renovation all at once or in stages?
