ᐅ Why does my BILLY bookcase only squeak under load?

Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY shelf from IKEA, which is used quite often, mainly as a small bookshelf in my home office. I noticed that it only squeaks when I put weight on it or it is under load – for example, when pulling out or adjusting the shelves while they are loaded. Otherwise, the shelf is completely silent.

My question is: why does my BILLY shelf only squeak under load? Are there specific reasons why the noise only occurs then and not all the time? Maybe it has something to do with the construction, materials, or load distribution? I’m looking forward to well-informed opinions or practical tips on how to fix this.

Summary of the most common causes of squeaking in BILLY shelves under load:

1. Movement of fasteners: screws, metal brackets, or dowels that shift slightly due to load.
2. Friction between wooden surfaces or between wood and metal.
3. Wood settling caused by moisture, temperature fluctuations, or mechanical stress.
4. Uneven floor surfaces creating tension within the furniture.

Recommended actions:
- Check and tighten screws and brackets if necessary.
- Treat contact surfaces with suitable lubricants (e.g., paraffin wax, silicone oil).
- Insert flexible spacers (felt pads, foam rubber) between moving parts.
- Level the floor or adjust the furniture feet.

This approach is based on various practical experiences and technical observations from similar furniture.

Hey, I always find it fascinating how a BILLY shelf can surprise us with noises – as if it has morning mood swings 😉

Jokes aside: The squeaking can be seen as "wood whispering" when it shows under load because it’s trying to move. I simply sprinkled some talcum powder on the relevant spots at my place back then – it worked wonders by reducing friction.

Another good idea: Small felt pads on the shelves to prevent them from rubbing directly against the side panels.

Give it a try, and don’t take it too seriously – your shelf wants to be treated gently! 🙂

Very nice picture!

I would like to add that some people see this as a quality issue, but especially with lower-cost furniture, which often consists of pressed wood or particleboard, this phenomenon is completely normal. It is a combination of material and construction.

Depending on how often the shelf is moved or loaded, the squeaking may only appear after extended use or may get worse.

Thank you very much for the detailed answers and tips!

In the meantime, I have checked all the screws and applied a suitable wax to the contact points. This has made the squeaking noticeably less frequent and quieter, which I consider a success.

I also found the tip about moisture and thermal effects interesting. My shelf is in a relatively dry room anyway, but I will keep an eye on whether the noises change seasonally.

One more point I’m wondering about: Do you think the squeaking can be completely avoided, or is it simply part of the “character” of the shelf? I think the shelf does its job really well, but the noise can be a bit distracting when working with concentration.
