ᐅ Wall-mounted shelving on an uneven wall – what installation options are available?

Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of mounting a Billy shelf on a rather uneven wall. The surface is irregular, with bulges and cracks that make standard screw solutions difficult.

My question is: What mounting options are available to securely and stably attach a Billy shelf to such an uneven wall? I am especially interested in practical solutions that help to keep the shelf level and ensure its load-bearing capacity.

I would like to discuss suitable anchors or mounting aids and am also open to alternative suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I agree. If the wall is really uneven, just switch to shelves with legs. They save a lot of hassle.

I understand the problem well; I once had a construction site like that myself. It’s frustrating when the wall just doesn’t cooperate. 🙂

Perhaps a combination would be useful: anchors plus wedges for leveling, and then support the shelf at the bottom with an angle bracket. That provides stability and relieves tension on the wall.

Has anyone worked with mounting rails before? They can also compensate for unevenness, but it might be a bit more work.

I like mounting rails; you first attach the rail to the wall using several anchors, which compensates for uneven surfaces. After that, the shelf can be hung flexibly on the rail.

Exactly, that is often the easiest method. The rail is sturdy, distributes the load, and can be aligned easily. Additionally, it compensates well for uneven surfaces due to multiple fixing points.

In my opinion, mounting rails are one of the most flexible solutions for uneven walls. However, it is important to ensure proper anchoring of the rail—at least three fastening points, depending on the length of the shelf. I also recommend using a spirit level to align the rail precisely and, if necessary, using spacers to compensate for unevenness in the wall’s depth.

Another option is prefabricated strip mounting: attach a smooth wooden strip to the wall, level out the irregularities with filler or shims, and then fix the shelf (e.g., a Billy shelf) to that. This is often more stable than mounting directly onto the wall.
