Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade my IKEA BESTÅ unit and want to install new doors. However, I am unsure which screws are best suited for this.
Specifically, it concerns attaching the doors to the hinges, as IKEA often uses special or at least non-standard screws. What sizes and thread types would be best if I, for example, replace or upgrade the doors myself?
Are self-tapping screws recommended, or is it better to use screws made of a certain material or with a specific coating? Also, I am interested in whether the screws should ideally have a particular length and diameter to ensure stability and a clean appearance.
Does anyone have experience with this or can offer specific recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Specifically, it’s about attaching the doors to the hinges, since IKEA often uses special or at least not quite standard screws. You’re touching on a real IKEA mystery here! 😅 Normally, IKEA uses screws with a diameter of 3.5 mm (about 0.14 inches) and a length of around 16–20 mm (0.6–0.8 inches) for BESTÅ doors’ hinges. Self-tapping screws usually work well because the wood or particleboard is not pre-drilled.
The material is mostly galvanized, which prevents rust – something to keep in mind when adding replacements. I recommend countersunk head screws, so they sit flush and nothing sticks out.
It’s important to go a size longer if the doors are heavier to ensure a secure hold. And of course, if you’re handy, you can pre-drill the holes to reduce the risk of the screws stripping out.

Are self-tapping screws recommended, or is it better to use screws made of a specific material or with a certain coating? For retrofitting IKEA BESTÅ doors, I recommend the following specifications:
- Screw type: Countersunk wood screws
- Diameter: 3.5 to 4 mm (commonly M4)
- Length: 16 to 20 mm (depending on door thickness)
- Material/coating: Galvanized or stainless steel (rust-resistant)
- Application: Self-tapping screws are ideal if you want to avoid pre-drilling. Otherwise, use thinner screws with pre-drilling.
The original IKEA screws usually meet these standards. Using galvanized screws provides corrosion protection, which is especially important in humid conditions.
It is also important not to choose screws that are too long to avoid damaging the material behind the door. If the hinges are metal, also check that the screw threads fit properly; an M4 thread is often standard.
I’ve done similar projects and can understand how confusing it can be. IKEA is usually quite precise with their measurements, but not all screws are the same quality. Important tip: Be careful not to overtighten the screws, or you might warp the doors.
And don’t worry if it’s not perfect the first time – you always learn with these kinds of projects.

Which dimensions and thread types should I ideally use when replacing or upgrading doors myself?I would like to add that the screws are usually included with replacement hinges or doors. If you need to buy screws separately, M4 thread size is standard. For doors made of MDF or particleboard, as is often the case with BESTÅ, self-tapping screws work very well.
Very important: If you do not pre-drill, always use high-quality material and the correct length. Screws that are too long can wedge unnecessarily and cause the panel to crack.
