Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit and want to install the doors. However, I notice that one of the doors sticks out slightly and does not close flush. The gap between the door and the frame is uneven, which affects the overall appearance.

My specific question: How can I properly adjust or align the KALLAX doors so they sit neatly and close evenly? Is there a trick to minimize the door sticking out without having to constantly readjust? I have already tried adjusting the hinges a bit, but the effect was rather minor.

Perhaps others have experience with this issue. Thanks for your tips!

Hello mikin,

I’m familiar with the issue of KALLAX doors sticking out. Basically, the included hinges are adjustable, but fine-tuning them can be a bit tricky. My advice: carefully loosen the hinge screws, then gently press and align the door. After that, tighten the screws again. Sometimes, shifting the rear hinge plate slightly in depth helps to bring the door more flush with the frame.

Additionally, a small piece of felt or a silicone bumper on the inside of the door can help if it doesn’t close completely tight. The important thing is to make sure the door doesn’t become misaligned when closing. Otherwise, even the best adjustment won’t work. 🙂

For precise adjustment of KALLAX doors, it is advisable to proceed systematically. The hinges on KALLAX furniture typically have three adjustment screws: horizontal, vertical, and depth.

1. First, adjust the vertical position to align the door evenly with the frame.
2. Next, adjust horizontally so the door sits flush against the cabinet.
3. Finally, adjust the depth to fine-tune the gap between the door and the cabinet.

Following this sequence helps improve the fit and reduce gaps. Avoid extreme adjustments, as these can affect the door’s stability.

Another important point: Make sure the KALLAX shelf itself is standing level. Often, doors do not close properly because the furniture is slightly uneven or the floor is uneven.

Check the spirit level on the shelf and the floor height to ensure the doors are not resting on sloped surfaces. I have had good results by adjusting furniture gliders on the different corners. This helps you get the base correctly aligned and improves your chances of properly adjusting the doors.

Tighten the hinges properly, but not too much. Align the door precisely; small rubber or felt pads at critical points can help prevent gaps.

Adjustment screws usually have small markings—make good use of them. If nothing helps, check if the door is warped.

This suggests that either the angle between the door and the cabinet frame is not optimal or the doors themselves may be slightly warped.

My usual approach is: After setting the basic height (vertical screws), I take a file or very fine sandpaper and carefully work on the edges of the door where they rub too much.

Furthermore, I check the exact squareness of the door using a carpenter’s square. For the clamping adjustment, I often use a wooden batten or even a small clamp to hold the door in place while tightening the screws.

Another often overlooked point: The drilled holes in the back panel where the hinges are mounted should not be too loose, as this can cause misalignment. If there is any play here, you can compensate by adding small wooden shavings or felt strips.

How wide is the gap exactly? And is only one door sticking out or several?
