Putanja5631 Oct 2018 08:13Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe but am unsure which tools would be best to use. The manual usually lists only the basic tools, such as the Allen key included in the package, but I believe that some additional tools could make the assembly significantly easier or more efficient.
The wardrobe, with its numerous screws, nails, and possibly dowels, does present a challenge. Therefore, I would like to know:
Which tools are useful and recommended for assembling the IKEA Hemnes? Should I use power tools in addition to the included tool (usually a small Allen key)? Or is it worth having a special screwdriver, a cordless drill, a hammer with certain features, or something else?
I look forward to specific tips, preferably with explanations of why these tools really help.
Thank you in advance!

Hello Putanja56,
I understand your considerations. My recommendation for assembling the Hemnes is the following set of tools:
- Cordless drill with adjustable torque: this helps prevent over-tightening or damage to the screws and wood.
- Various Allen keys (hex keys) that fit the screws included in the set.
- Rubber mallet: better than a regular hammer because it protects the material when inserting dowels or back panels.
- Phillips screwdriver, as some connections are fastened this way.
Power tools can speed up the assembly, but you should be careful not to damage the delicate parts. Over-tightening the screws is a common mistake.
I hope this helps you.

However, one should not overestimate the usefulness of a cordless screwdriver. With the rather delicate construction of Hemnes, electric power can quickly cause damage if used carelessly.
Therefore, my question is: Are there any other hardware recommendations for particularly sensitive joints, or is that mostly unnecessary? For example, there are also right-angle drills or flexible attachments. Do these tools make sense when assembling IKEA furniture, or are they just gimmicks?

Problems tend to arise more from overtightening or misaligning the parts. I would suggest that if you’re unsure, it’s better to work by hand and check frequently, rather than buying special tools that will rarely be used.
Hey, I assembled the Hemnes last month and can only say: a cordless drill is your best friend! I highly recommend it – it saves so much time and frustration.
Very important: use the right size Allen bit and reduce the torque setting so you don’t damage the screws.
A rubber mallet is really handy, especially when inserting the wall plugs – it feels much safer!
Once you have these, you’ll get through the assembly easily! Good luck! 🙂
