Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY cabinet from IKEA, but for the past few days, the doors have not been closing properly. The doors always stick out slightly, and no matter how I adjust the hinges, the gaps don’t completely disappear. Even after lightly tightening the screws, there has been no visible improvement.

Sometimes the door also gets stuck when closing, and it feels like the door might be warped. However, I have not noticed any visible damage or deformation to the wood.

My question to you is: What should I do if BILLY doors are no longer closing properly? Is it likely an issue with the hinge adjustment, or could it also be due to load or material defects? Do you have any tips on how to fix the problem permanently without having to replace the doors or the entire cabinet?

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is a common issue with BILLY cabinets, but it can usually be fixed quite easily. The BILLY door hinges typically offer several adjustment options: you can move the door horizontally, adjust the hinge depth, and also change its tilt.

My first tip: try loosening the screws used for door adjustment carefully, align the door as straight as possible, and then tighten the screws again. Often the position only changes slightly, but enough to allow the door to close properly.

If that doesn’t help, check whether the base panel and the cabinet frame are perfectly level. Sometimes an uneven surface causes the cabinet to tilt slightly, which means the doors aren’t aligned correctly.

If the door is warped so much that the hinges cannot compensate anymore, it may be possible to remove the doors and gently sand them down—but only slightly to avoid damaging the surface.

Feel free to share more details about the situation, whether one door is affected more than the other or both. Then I might be able to give more targeted advice 🙂

Hello Daisylen,

I have been working on furniture repairs and BILLY cabinets for quite some time, so I have some technical tips that might help you.

First, you should carefully check which gap is affected: at the top, bottom, or side? The BILLY hinges are designed so that vertical and horizontal alignment can be adjusted separately. The screws that attach the door to the hinges are often used for fine-tuning.

It is also important to check the mounting holes for proper fit. If the holes are slightly damaged or the dowel has loosened, this could be a reason for poor closing movement.

The type of wall fastening could also play a role if the cabinet is not firmly secured—generally, you should always fasten the cabinet to the wall to prevent any play. This stops the entire carcass from shifting, which over time can cause the doors to go out of alignment.

If you have the right tools, use a spirit level to check the alignment on the sides and front edge. Even slight distortions in the cabinet can often cause door-closing problems.

I would also recommend generously lubricating the hinges with a suitable lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) if the closing action is stiff—but only apply it to the moving parts, not directly on the wooden surfaces.

Can you also describe if the doors have the exact correct height? Sometimes lifting or lowering the door slightly helps optimize the positioning.

If you like, please share the exact model designation of your BILLY cabinet and how long you have been using it. Then I can address possible material fatigue more specifically.

Hello Daisylen,

I can completely understand how frustrating it is when the doors on the BILLY don’t close properly anymore – I’ve been quite annoyed by that myself with my own cabinet.

is a good explanation, especially the part about adjusting the hinges can really work wonders.

Sometimes I’ve also found that a slightly warped door can be the cause – especially with older BILLY cabinets that get a lot of use. In those cases, I carefully smoothed the edges a bit with fine sandpaper or fixed minor irregularities.

What helped me was to be patient and go through all the adjustment options step by step. Often you realize you’re getting closer to the best position. That eased my uncertainty a bit because I didn’t immediately think I had to replace everything.

Keep at it, and if it doesn’t work out right away, just remember there are many people here who tackle these kinds of projects regularly.

I’d also recommend closely observing the cabinet to see if the doors are exposed to temperature fluctuations or humidity during the day – that especially affects wood.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on how things go!
