gunthersin2 Jul 2024 08:37Hello everyone, I am currently exploring ways to customize the doors of the IKEA Platsa cabinet to make my living space more personal and harmonious. I am particularly interested in options for enhancing or completely transforming the standard white or neutral doors—whether through paint, materials, or additional elements. It is important to me that these modifications are durable and as straightforward as possible, without affecting the functionality or making the doors unusable. Does anyone have experience with, for example, vinyl wraps, painting, wood or fabric coverings? And is it also possible to implement creative ideas like magnetic boards, chalkboard paint, or built-in LED lighting? I would greatly appreciate a detailed explanation of the various options, including their advantages and disadvantages, as well as any tips on tools or materials.
Your question is really interesting, but I wonder if you have already considered the durability of the different methods?
With films, for example, you need to keep in mind that they can start to peel or develop wrinkles over time, especially at the edges. Paint finishes are also not always as durable as one might think and require careful surface preparation. I also believe that functionality should not be underestimated: Can the hinges still be adjusted properly, or do some materials cause the doors to no longer close correctly?
Does anyone have long-term experience here that we can compare?

When customizing the IKEA PLATSA doors, I like to proceed step by step to ensure that no important details are overlooked. First of all, the surface texture of the doors is crucial: they are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard, which requires specific techniques.
- Adhesive films: Applying high-quality self-adhesive films is the easiest method. I recommend choosing matte or satin films, as these are less prone to fingerprints. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface before application and ensure it is free of dust.
- Painting: For a durable color adjustment, it is possible to lightly sand the doors and then use acrylic paint or a paint specially designed for furniture. Applying several thin layers is recommended to avoid drips.
- Additional elements: You can add magnetic boards or chalkboard paint by using special primers to ensure proper adhesion. LEDs are also an option, but keep in mind the power connection: it is best to choose internal solutions with batteries or remote control to avoid visible cables.
What does your current room look like — which style do you want to match the doors with? And how much DIY experience do you have? This will help tailor the advice to your specific possibilities.

To give you a clear guide on how to customize the IKEA PLATSA doors, here is a step-by-step instruction you can follow:
1. Preparation: Remove the doors to make working easier. Take off all fittings.
2. Basic cleaning with a mild detergent and a dry cloth.
3. Sanding: For painted surfaces, lightly roughen the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 220).
4. Priming: Especially important for paint and chalkboard paint to improve adhesion.
5. Design:
- Films: Apply carefully, preferably with two people, smoothing out air bubbles with a paint roller.
- Painting: Apply 2-3 thin layers, do not forget to sand lightly between coats.
- Chalkboard paint: Make sure to apply several layers for an even surface.
6. Additional decoration: Install recessed handles or new handles, apply wooden appliques or even fabrics with spray adhesive.
Common mistakes are:
- Insufficient cleaning before starting
- Impatience with drying times of the paint
- Applying paint layers that are too thick
If you need an overview of possible products, I can gladly provide recommendations.
Good luck, it will look great!

That’s actually a point I haven’t thought about in detail yet. The doors should definitely last at least a few years without me having to redo everything.
My room is more Scandinavian style, with lots of wood and light colors, clear and minimalist. I feel confident enough to do some painting, as long as the instructions are clear. I’m less interested in electrical extras because I want to keep the wardrobe as simple as possible.
Before I get started, I’d like to know: What is the best way to clean or maintain films or paint so they stay looking good for a long time? And can thin veneer sheets also be used on the PLATSA doors if done properly?

For maintenance: You can clean films with a damp microfiber cloth; do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
Painted surfaces are resistant to water but do not roughen them with abrasive sponges.
Thin veneers can be fixed with special wood glue but are more sensitive to moisture.
