My main question is: How can Billy bookcases be assembled to last for a long time? I’m not only referring to correct assembly according to the instructions but also looking for tips on stabilizing and protecting the units—such as advice regarding dowels, screws, wall mounting, or material care. Additionally, I’m interested in the best way to handle heavy loads or multiple units combined, so nothing wobbles or breaks. I would really appreciate practical advice, possible tricks, and shared experiences!
I would say this: IKEA Billy shelves are sturdy everyday heroes, but only if you treat them with respect 🙂! So, don’t just place them and start loading – secure your shelving dreams to the wall; wall anchoring is essential. And if you have several shelves side by side, connect them together – it adds great stability! A bit of care when screwing things in makes the whole setup last longer than you might expect. 😉

Avoid placing shelves free-standing when they are heavily loaded.Exactly, wall mounting is essential for stable Billy shelves. Additionally, when installing, it is important to use the appropriate anchors provided, depending on the wall type (e.g., expansion anchors for concrete, cavity anchors for drywall).
Another key point is the correct positioning of the shelves. To prevent sagging, avoid overloading the shelves and distribute the weight evenly.
I also recommend connecting shelves placed side by side to increase overall stability.

Just to add: Using original parts is essential. Replacement parts or inferior screws can affect durability.
Assembly should ensure that all connections are tight without any play. Regularly checking screws and anchors is advisable, especially if the shelf is frequently loaded or moved.
For maintenance, I recommend protecting the material (chipboard) from moisture and cleaning surfaces as needed with appropriate products to prevent swelling.
