Hello everyone, I am planning to buy a Billy bookcase from Ikea for my office, but I am unsure about what to consider when choosing the right one. It’s not just about the appearance or price, but also factors such as load capacity, dimensions, possible compatible extensions, and of course, stability. Are there any special considerations for assembly or material choice (color, finish) that are particularly important for everyday office use? I work a lot with binders and books and thought the Billy bookcase would be ideal for that. Maybe you also have tips on what to specifically watch out for with Billy compared to other shelving systems? Looking forward to your expertise!

I completely understand your concerns. Especially when you frequently work with heavy folders, you quickly notice if a shelf isn’t stable enough. I once had a Billy shelf in my office that I reinforced with additional stabilizers because it started to lean when fully loaded. It’s also important to make sure you don’t overload the shelves beyond the manufacturer’s specifications. And yes, assembly isn’t difficult, but you definitely shouldn’t forget to secure it to the wall—that makes a huge difference in terms of stability!

Pay special attention to using wall fasteners, observing the maximum load capacity of the floors, and choosing the appropriate depth. The 40cm (16 inches) Billy units are best for holding binders.

For selecting a Billy shelf for the office, I recommend the following structured approach: 1. Measure dimensions precisely, especially width and height, to ensure the shelf fits well in the space. 2. Consider load capacity: the standard shelves are designed for about 15 kg (33 lbs) load; for heavier weights, reinforcement or lighter loading is advisable. 3. Material and finish: the white lacquered version is easy to maintain but prone to scratches; real wood look options can appear more durable. 4. Check for extensions: a BILLY shelf can be modularly expanded with REGISSÖR glass or wood doors or additional units, providing practical storage for the office. 5. Installation: wall mounting is mandatory to prevent instability. Be sure to select appropriate wall anchors for your wall type. 6. Pay attention to depth! 28 cm (11 inches) is too narrow for wide binders; 40 cm (16 inches) or 50 cm (20 inches) are more suitable.

This way, you will have a durable, sturdy, and functional shelf for your office.

Exactly! I also want to emphasize how important this is. Without securing the shelf to the wall, it can actually tip over dangerously, especially if there are children or pets in the home. Even if you’re just in an office, it’s a real safety advantage when handling folders and boxes.

I can confirm that load capacity is a key issue. Especially when storing many heavy binders or books, you notice how the shelves gradually bend slightly over time. What helped me was cutting additional sturdy MDF shelves and placing them underneath the Billy shelves. This has worked great for me for over two years and looks very professional. However, the Ikea shelves themselves are really surprisingly robust, as long as you respect the maximum load limits. Another tip: If the shelf is going to be larger/deeper, the wider versions are often better for storing paper. I don’t use doors in my office to allow quick access.
