Hello everyone,

I have owned an IKEA Hemnes furniture piece for some time now (specifically a pine wood sideboard) and have noticed that keeping it consistently dry and protected from moisture is not straightforward. This is especially challenging in rooms with higher humidity levels—such as kitchens, bathrooms, or certain living areas during autumn and winter.

I am particularly interested in learning how to best keep an IKEA Hemnes furniture piece dry without risking damage to the wood or using unsuitable treatment methods. Are there any proven techniques, maintenance tips, or specific protective products you would recommend?

I would like to know how to protect the wood effectively without compromising its appearance or functionality, and also how to prevent common moisture-related issues like swelling or warping.

Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hello Dagi37,

great question! The Hemnes is such a beautiful piece, but wood and moisture don’t always get along well 😅.

My recommendation: The most important thing is proper ventilation of the room. Even if it sounds obvious at first – a room with Hemnes furniture should be regularly aired out to let the moisture escape. And if it’s in the kitchen or bathroom, a dehumidifier could work wonders.

Regarding maintenance: I like to use a mild wood wax or care oil suitable for pine wood. But it really should be a product that penetrates deeply while still allowing the wood to breathe – definitely avoid any varnishes or harsh chemicals.

And one small trick: I always place Hemnes furniture a few centimeters (inches) away from the wall to prevent moisture from reaching the back.

This way, the wood stays in great condition and always looks fresh! 😊

Good morning everyone,

I’d like to add some information because proper care is really important for Hemnes.

First, a few tips on storage and the environment:
- Hemnes is made from solid pine wood, which is sturdy but also prone to swelling if exposed to too much moisture.
- Therefore, furniture should be stored in a dry place, and no direct sources of moisture should be placed on it (no hot or wet pots, no aquariums nearby).

For maintenance, I recommend the following steps:
1. Remove dust and dirt with a soft, dry cloth.
2. Use a slightly damp cloth (not wet!) for cleaning, and dry immediately afterward.
3. Treat the wood at least once a year with specially formulated wood oil or wax. Note: IKEA also offers wood care products specifically designed for their furniture.

Common mistakes:
- Cleaning Hemnes with dish soap or harsh cleaners, which strip the wood of its natural oils and cause it to dry out.
- Placing the furniture directly against uninsulated external walls, where condensation can form.

In conclusion: To prevent moisture damage, it is essential to monitor the indoor climate—ideal humidity is between 40-60%.

I hope this helps.

Brief and to the point:

- Do not wipe furniture with a wet cloth.
- Never place furniture directly against the wall; keep a distance of 5 cm (2 inches).
- Use a dehumidifier in damp rooms.
- Apply wood oil to stains, but use sparingly.

This is how you avoid problems with the Hemnes.
