Hello everyone, I plan to use my IKEA KALLAX as a coffee table, but I find the standard height a bit too low for my living area. My question is: Is it possible to increase the height of the KALLAX, for example by adding extra legs or a subframe, without compromising its stability and load capacity? I would also appreciate tips on the best way to approach the assembly and what to consider when selecting materials. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

I have used the KALLAX as a coffee table myself, but only at its original height. Your idea to build the table higher sounds interesting, though I can imagine that such a modification might involve some small risks. I once noticed that the sides tend to wobble slightly if it’s not placed on a solid floor.

It’s also important that the added height doesn’t become too much, otherwise the whole piece of furniture can feel unstable. Please keep us updated on how you do the assembly and whether it works well. 🙂

Absolutely. 50-55 cm (20-22 inches) sounds good; anything above that can quickly become unstable if the legs aren’t really sturdy.

For a simple height increase: also take a look at the IKEA BEKVÄM stool legs. They are sturdy, about 9 cm (3.5 inches) high, and easy to screw on. This allows you to easily raise the KALLAX without much effort in the construction.

They really are a good option. I raised my KALLAX by 12cm (5 inches) by screwing them directly under the frame. Important: pre-drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood.

Exactly, that is the most important point. One more tip: use thin washers with the screws to protect the surface and ensure better grip. And if you’re unsure, it’s better to choose screws that are a bit shorter, but not too short.

To JEJEGU: Have you already decided what material your feet should be made of? Wood or metal? Depending on the material, there are also different suitable screws and anchors.

Thanks for the many tips! I am leaning towards sturdy wooden furniture legs that visually match the KALLAX. I have ordered wood screws and washers and plan to drill pilot holes carefully.

If I raise the height to about 50cm (20 inches), I will check the stability thoroughly, as I now know what to watch out for. I’ll be happy to share feedback here once the assembly is complete.
